Title: XJ650 Electrical Problems
Post by: cale.fox on April 28, 2008, 07:41:33 AM
Hey I was riding my 81 yamaha xj650 when it all of a sudden lost all power when i stopped at a stop sign.  I tried putting it back in neutral but with the key on there was no power getting to anything.   I checked the fuses under the seat and the connections but i can't find anything obvious.  Even with a battery charger nothing will come on.  I dont know much about electrical systems on bikes.  Does anyone have any ideas??  i'm stumped.. thanks

Hi there, I had a VF750 Honda that did the same thing on me one night, more than a bit scary! After getting the bike home, fuses were checked, battery ok, start looking! Fortunately I started looking at the wires and connections on the ignition switch and what do you know two wires broken about on inch below the switch. The problem was caused by the fact that the ignition switch was mounted on the top yoke and what with age and side to side movement  the wires had broken. Repair done, everything working, we're away again. Could be worth checking that area on your XJ. Good luck. Cheers, Dave
