Hi all. Renovating a 1963 CB72. Need to know which of the new rings I've bought, goes on top. The oil ring is obvious but the others are bright and dark. Which one goes on top? ( I've found the marks so I know which way up they go)
Thanks
Phil

If you inspect the two different rings carefully, does one of them have slightly chamfered outer edges and the other one have square edges?
If so then the chamfered one is most likely to be the upper ring, and to take a guess I'd say that it would be the bright one?

Thanks for your advice L.A.B.
A Bernard Saunders also got in touch. Knows CB72 engines inside out. Told me the bright ring definatley goes on the top. The dark one is the oil scraper ring.
I took photo's as I assembled and as you will see from the attached, got it the wrong way around. It's not a good enough shot to make out the chamfer you mention but I'll have a good look when I'm back in there.
Cheers for your help.

The chamfered edges (at least the upper one) does seem to show up in the photo on the bright ring, which as you said, is fitted in the wrong groove.

Hello there, the top ring is the shiny chrome ring, the second ring is the darker one,fit the rings with the makers mark ,(or oversize mark if applicable),facing up, ( towards the piston crown)
