Title: Royal Enfield Ensign tyre sizes anyone?
Post by: dirk_diamondcutter on January 25, 2007, 05:09:24 AM
My father is just re-building his EEnsign and would like to know what the original correct tyre sizes and type are.

He has looked in a couple of the owners hand books that he has but there is nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Jason.

= 2.75" x 19" front and rear.

Addition

A photo in Roy Bacon's book 'Royal Enfield-The Postwar Models' seems to show an Ensign fitted with a 'Dunlop Lightweight' tyre. I would expect this type of tyre to be practically unobtainable (in any sort of usable condition?).

I bought new 2.75x19 Cheng Shin tyres  for use on both a 1930 Radco and a 1930 Excelsior. They are fine, and much better than old stock tyres that may have plenty of tread but have hardened over the years.  A friend has a 1950 Ambassador with old stock tyres and although the old tyres looked good, with plenty of tread we soon found out their performance didn't live up to their looks.
The Cheng Shin are very satisfactory.
Cheers, Bob

Bob... I also have Cheng Shins on my A10 and have found them to be very good, however I think that the name sounds yucky and I know many have frowned on them because of not having been so good in the past. Seems that they were a harder material back then and were prone to slipping. Looking at the tyre material now they are much more 'rubbery' and grippy. I would not hesitate to use them again.
Cheers

I have passed the info on to my Dad who is very grateful.

Many thanks.

Hopefully he will be up and posting soon as he is making the plunge and buying himself a laptop............65 and never touched a pc!!!

He will probably post a few pics of his 1933 OK Supreme 350cc  sprint bike which he has just finished.
