hello there, i have just started the engine up on my 1965 b.s.a.c15 project.with the risk of sounding a bit dim can anyone  help me please? the oil pump is obviously working as the top end is receiving oil.the oil tank is receiving oil from the brass  return pipes on the rocker box but it seems quite slow to me i.e. a little drip at a time. is this normal or should it be filling quicker ? obviously i don,t want to run it again till i know as i don,t want to cause any engine damage.any advice would be welcome.

On a new or fresh rebuild the oil has to fill various cavities and then reach a level in the crankcase before any great amount will return, how long did you let it run for?.

The scavenge pipe inlet is at the lowest point in the engine, so oil should be returning almost immediately if all's well.

Don't understand this. Those brass pipes on the rocker box are oil supplies to the rockers, surely?

If I remember correctly the rocker oil feed is taken from a t- piece on the oil return pipe where the return pipe connects to the oil tank, as Rex said the return to the tank should be fairly quick so I would check the whole oil system before running the engine again   Personally my worry would be that if no oil is returning to the tank, is the level in the tank dropping, and if it is not then is any oil getting to the motor
things to check  externally would be are the return and feed connected to the correct pipes at the union block , is the return or feed to and from the tank blocked or restricted and check the oil union block is clear  If these are clear then the problem would seem to be  with the oil pump

thanks for your replies, i only ran it for a couple of minutes and now i can check , your suggestions as i am learning all the time. cheers.

A couple of minutes should be plenty long enough for the oil to be returning on one of these, try removing the drain plug from the sump if you are getting oil  draining from here then it is likely that you have a scavenge  problem if not then a feed problem is likely.

Also check you have the pipes to the oil tank connected the correct way round, you wont be the first who has crossed them over,(Edit just seen Yosemite has already suggested this).
