this is a new one , ALL cars and bikes which have a valid tax disc MUST be insured , or Sorn and the tax disc returned to the dvla , so if i change which machine i have insured ( break down , fancy a change etc ) i must return the tax disc ? which idiot thought this one up ? failling to do so is £100 fine
-
Seems OK to me. No insurance means the tax disc is invalid, so the last thing DVLA want is some t*sser changing the bike on a named bike policy just to tax other bike(s).
It's more work for them, so why worry, especially now that you can tax on-line anyway?
-
are they going to refund the duty if its less than 6 months ? i already know your position on paying tax so its not an issue for some one with such high morals and standing as your self where the tax system can do no wronge (enjoy stuffing the turky) . this has come to light as i just bought my son a VW car for xmas , the car is taxed and mot till next July , and he is 17 in january and will start lessons , the v5c has come back to him telling him to insure the car or surender the tax , he is not a tosser but thinks this is wronge and so do i ,

You appear to be looking at this from the wrong angle?
The current rule is that a vehicle must either be insured or SORNed.
In order to SORN a vehicle the tax disc must also be surrendered (for refund) therefore technically you can't legally have a vehicle on SORN that is taxed.

"You appear to be looking at this from the wrong angle?" no im looking at it from my sons angle , which is why surender the tax for a car he cannot drive yet so there for is not insured , the tax belongs to him as it was part of the car when bought , it is not a problem to sorn but why the tax part ? this is the new part . its a bit like if your not going to post that letter give us the stamp back

Well that's how it is. A vehicle either has to be insured (even if it is not being used on the road) or it must be SORNed in which case the tax disc must be surrendered and it's been that way for a while now.

He hasn't insured it because he can't drive it, so why would he need tax on it? If he hasn't got insurance he can't park it on the road either.
Unless he was going to just drive it illegally with the current tax disc, and hope he wasn't stopped?
-
why do they want the tax back ? i can not think of another situation where this happens , something you have bought and own is asked for back ? can anyone else , how long has it been like this
-
why do they want the tax back ?
?
You send the tax DISC back.
YOU (or your son) get the outstanding road tax (for each full month remaining) refunded when you surrender the tax disc. Think about it, if the vehicle is sitting there unused then the tax is running out anyway, by getting a refund you (or your son) will be gaining not losing.
-
That is great, but only if you can park the vehicle off road. What happens if you can't?

If the vehicle is parked 'on the road' then it must be taxed, MOT'd (where applicable) and insured anyway, but that's always* been the case.
*(or at least it will be for as far back as most current drivers can remember).

The MIB is a separate body and contracted down from the DVLA to keep track of uninsured vehicles instead of the DVLA. (yet again another company funded by the tax payer with no real value for the public)
The vehicle is on my private land and I am incensed by the bother of civil law requiring myself to file a SORN, hand back tax disc then reinstate, all because I choose to keep a uninsured vehicle off the road.
And by not complying with these departments paper trails, receiving threats demanding £100,
there is a case for de registering a vheicule with this MIB quango , and it does smack of the large number of parking fines being issued via private companys (which also threaten legal action) i think ill let this one run and see how far they want to take it , i think they will give up at the county court stage , which ever way it will cost them far more than £1000 (max) so with any luck will prove un workable . and this is there idea of how to SAVE money , thank god there not running a private company

Wetdog,
Send the disc back & get the refund @ this level you cannot win!
Just do it & save yourself further grief!
Cheers

"Just do it & save yourself further grief!" ........ no thanks , im enjoying my self to much , this stupid self generating system is unworkable and will be dropped ............given that the transport policies in this Great Nation of ours seem to be getting more & more anti-vehicle every day/week/year

Many years ago under the postwar Labour government a council official came to our house with a complaint about my father repairing vehicles from a residential property. Father told him that both motorcycles were his own and the councilperson expressed his opinion that as a working class person father should not have two motorcycles. Luckily he did not look in the shed where the rest of fathers bikes were.
Nothing changes, it just gets dearer to enjoy yourself.

Nanny state , and if your english and law abidding your an easy target , i have come to this conclusion after many years dealing with building control (who have now been seperated from the council and all the old hitlers made redundant ) They lost control years ago in birmingham when the first beds in sheds started to appear and they realised the people they where trying to tell to take them down did not speak english (except when it suited them) which ment they could only focus on english .And all to offten i find english are to quike to do as we are told or "take it lyeing down" this must change for all our good . so if you feel some thing is not right or fair dont be affraid to say so , if these things are not challenged there will be more to come . coming to all areas very soon and its not a send up

Look be realistic much as I agree with you, you cannot buck the system without taking a risk if as you say you are prepared to let it run. If they fine you the statutary £100 fine and you let them take you to court you could end up paying not only your legal costs but also theirs. My advice would be do as they say then go along to see your local MP put your case to him he can then raise the matter with the relevant minister who will have to give him a written reply which he will forward on to you. At least you will have the satisfaction of giving the relvant minister something useful to do for a change having to explain what you see as a totally nonsensical situation. I have done this myself over the introduction of Ethanol into petrol I was surprised at level of response that I got from my local MP and the minster in charge.
-
at least that way you keep you MP and ministers in a job , dont get me started as there are far to many MPs and ministers pushing pencils around here , i tend to go with the action speaks loader than words aproch (also my engish is very poor so carnt be arsed writing ) after your writen ethonol in fuel letter and your impresive responce what happened ? ....... f**k all .......thats what

Don't say I didn't warn you!

Hello Try and make sense of this. A pensioner friend of mine as been contacted by dvla that her license has been revoke for a memory problem??.
Now for the mystery. The old Bill turned up in a Patrol car and demanded she hand over the car keys. They took the car away and returned it 2 hours later. It is Taxed, Tested and Insured. I have been to the police station with her and cannot find out why they are keeping the Keys.
They parked the car in the middle of the narrow drive and the dustbins could not be wheeled past the car to be emptied. So i had to make another trip to the cop shop to try and get the keys, which they would not part with. They came at 8pm at night and I went across to ask about the keys and they where very officious. They then tried to move the car and it had a flat battery and decided not to push to one side. The bin was full of plastic bags and heavy, instead of emptying some of the bags they struggled with the bin over the car bonnet. I asked them if they where coming next week to carry the other bin over the car, which did not go down well We have now reached Orwells 1984.
-
this sounds like her GP has informed them of a medical condition
-
Yep, I thought that must be the case, but taking the keys is that legal?
The car needs to be transferred to someone else who can drive her round & do her shopping, it may be possible to do a deal with the insurance company, additional driver?
Why did they take the car though? Get the keys back as soon as possible, seek Legal advice too!
Cheers
John

The lady is 83 widowed and with no family. So I think she will have to sell the car. If she wants her license back she will have to go to Thetford for what DVLA will not say.
-
i think her licence may have expired , comes to us all im afraid , im not sure what you do , may be a medical , eye sight etc ............. call the police and tell them her medication is in the glove box , whilst they are there you can move the car , i dred the day but its coming
-
The license it self is still valid. Just that DVLA has revoked it. On the balance of things with a 168mile round trip to thetford the best way is just to sell the car.
What ever you think about the French they had the brains to a least got rid of the shit at the top.
Long live the revolution.

You mean, it was the Queen herself who revoked the old girl's licence? Blimey, that's what I like, a hands-on monarch.
-
Ha Ha very funny Rex. If you get your self a history book you will find that more than the Queen ended up walking round with their heads under their arms.
Long live the Revolution brother ;) ;)

To go back to Wetdogs post on Dec 8th, Can you not have all your legal, usable bikes on one policy? ,this is Vintage Bike Forum so your bikes will not need MOT tests and they“ll all be on a free tax disc. Were there any British bikes after 1973 worth having?
I“ve never seen owt on here about Woolers or Heskeths and not many Silks either.
