Title: Old Matchless
Post by: Aijala on September 07, 2008, 03:18:32 PM
Sometime ago, i asked people here which one to buy bsa or sunbeam. Soon everyone started talking about Royal Enfield. Well i ended up buying old Matchless but still cheers for everyone. Now what i got is 1951 g9 500cc with few problems.
1. none of the electricts works and battery is dead.
2. leaks oil somewhere
3. 3rd gear jumps to neutral
4. backfires

I don't like the clutch, i have never owned a bike before so no experience but when i press the clutch and try to put to first gear it has to be kind of forced in. and i have to give throttle at the same time otherwise it stalls but when in gear no problem just hit the road. After a while it starts to loose power. 4th gear full throttle and managed to keep the speed i was driving maybe 50-60km/h. And it did not go any faster. oh the speedometer doesn't work.... but what a beauty...

Surely there must be someone in your area who knows a bit about old british bikes who could have a look and advise.

What about the Vintage Club, they have branchs all over england, have you tried the AJS / Matchless Owners Club?

I think Aijala's reference to "50-60km/h" means he's likely to be outside the UK?
Perhaps Aijala can say whereabouts he is on the planet, as that could help?
