Title: Norton Electra Electronic Ignition
Post by: ramwing7 on November 08, 2021, 02:11:15 PM
I recently purchased a Wassel electronic ignition for my 1963 Norton Electra.  To make a long story short, it doesn't fit.

The mounting holes on the Wassel stator are 2 1/4" center to center.  The mounting holes on the Electra are 2 5/8".  Didn't expect that.

Question is has anyone installed an electronic ignition on an Electra and if so, which one?
The NOC lists a Boyer ignition for the Electra.  Anybody used that?

If not too inconvenient, could someone measure the distance between the mounting holes on their Electra to see if they are the same as mine?

Thanks.

It would be easy enough to make up a bracket. TBH I wouldn't expect a generic ignition module to fit anything without some work.

Wassell stuff doesn't have the best reputation although I used one of their voltage regulators with no problems.

if I'm reading it right the PCD of the original and Wassell stators are considerably different. I don't see any easy way out of that conundrum ???

Have you run this problem past Wassell ?

I see that Pazon offer their SureFire ignitions for various models,
and the Norton lightweights kit has a different number to other kits.
So some at least are aware of the differences.

I've fitted a Boyer system to an Electra and it works brilliantly, resulting in an engine that is so easy to start and runs really smoothly. I believe that it is the unit originally designed for the Commando. Not that you need to worry about that as its all explained in the instructions. I've also fitted the same unit to the Jubilee with similar results.
