British Bikes / 1979 triumph bonneville t140e hard to start
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:19:24 PM »
i have a stock 1979 triumph t140e with electronic ignition.  i ride it everyday around town(about 40 miles). usually it starts up with one kick, even if it has been sitting for a few days.  after a 150 mile trip the other day, i have been having troubles starting it . i kick it and kick it, but it just wont start up.  once started though, it rides fine and holds an idle fine.  starting it up once it is warm is no problem either, just a single kick. i put in new plugs today, but saw no change ( champion n5c).

i think it is running a bit rich because the plugs i replaced had black carbon on them.

usually i push down the cold start lever when i turn it on, but now it will only start up if i dont  push it down.  when it is pushed down, the bike doesnt even come close to starting up.

is it too rich?  would leaning it out help me start it easier? the screw that adjusts the richness was very easy to turn on one of the carbs, but  more difficult on the other.  im not sure if that means anything though.

also, what temperature should my motor be running at?

thanks for any help.
my leg is killing me from kicking on that bike

British Bikes / amal carb adjustment
« on: May 01, 2008, 04:39:17 AM »
i have a 1979 t140e with amal mkII 2900 carbs.  my spark plugs are covered in dull black carbon except for the side electrode, which is close to its' original color.  i assume i am running rich and need to lean out my mixture, but i am not exactly sure of how to do it.  i have the workshop manual, however i am unsure of how much to turn the adjustment screws.  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

British Bikes / 79 t140 hard to start

my newly aquired t140 i a real pain to start.  i open the petcocks, turn the key in the ignition to on, press the tickler down for a few seconds and then kick, but not much happens.  sometimes it gives me a backfire from one pipe or the other and sometimes the engine hits a few beats, but then stops. once it gets going and is warm, it turns back on with just one small kick.  i have new plugs, wires, battery, the carb is clean, and the previous owner just had it serviced before i got it.  am i starting it wrong or forgeting something?  i have the workshop manual, but it does not give any specific answers. i also heard there is some kind of electric ignition mod that i can add to make starting easier, but dont know much about that.

British Bikes / 79 triumph T140 out of storage
« on: March 31, 2008, 01:10:48 PM »
i just bought a 79 triumph bonneville that has been in someone's garage for a little too long.  i think the gas is pretty old too.  the bike is completely stock and is in great condition other than the fact that it has been sitting for quite a while.  The bike has trouble starting and then runs rough with small back-fires.

how should i clean the carbs and what other parts should i look at to get this back on the road?
