From your reply I am convinced the bike is definitely a Matchless now
I had not seen this particular tank badge  - more used to seeing the 'M' with wings emblem, but having looked into this  - it is virtually identical to the attached so I am sure you are correct.

Can anyone help identify?
As far as I know the photo was taken in the 1920's.
We know he liked Sunbeam motorcycles but I cannot tell which model this is.
There are some clues I have been looking into  - like the  way the exhaust slopes forward is fairly distinctive, and the tank badge is visible but unreadable to me.
Any help or advice appreciated
