British Bikes / Re: When were sliding HexagON taps introduced?
« on: August 13, 2016, 05:05:57 PM »
According to the Enots catalogue of c1938 the concentric tap had been around for 7 years and was patented under #194036/23 in Britain. They state in the literature that the Hexagonal button was for push on and the circular button was push off (something I did not know !!). They came in polished nickel plated finish - Chromium was an extra.

British Bikes / Re: Ariel VB 600 piston option

Tony
What might fit is a Harley Davidson Piston for 1930 - 36 70ci or 1937-49 80ci  which are very similar in size. Usually HD pistons are readily ? available. Size is 86.919 dia, 1 23/32 comp, 3 7/32 length, 20.1 pin dia.  Hepolite # is 7066 or T7857
Orig Ariel piston  was Hepolite # SW11327 86.384 dia, 1 15/16 comp, 3.1155 length and pin 20.61

From what I can gather JP pistons are significantly heavier than the original part.

Tank shape is very similar to that used on late 20's early 30's NSU 501.

British Bikes / Re: Binks carb on a 1926 Rover Car?
« on: June 07, 2016, 08:33:15 AM »
Roy Bacon wrote a book " Restoring Motorcycle Carburettors" which gives some information on Binks carbs but at first glance the ones shown in the book look nothing like the one in the picture. In the book, one picture shows a twin slide type and the other two  are the "Rat" or "Mouse Trap" racing carbs.

Hope this helps

I will try to get the owner to recheck the frame number and also tell me where on the frame he found it, plus in what orientation was it stamped.

British Bikes / Villiers powered machine

I have been asked to identify a pre-war bike which has a Villiers Mk17A engine with engine number BYX833 and frame number C 39545.
From the engine number I can ascertain that it was manufactured around 1935-38 (1934 from Villiers Singles and Twins by Roy Bacon) but i have been unable to identify the frame number in order to identify the bike. The nearest I have come is Excelsior which had frame numbers commencing with a C but apparently Excelsior used the model number as a prefix to the frame number. Could it be a Fanny-B?
