British Bikes / BSA B40 ELECTRICAL PROBLEM
« on: June 13, 2010, 05:53:18 AM »
Hi everyone. I am just finishing putting back together a 1962 BSA B40 350CC and am experiencing the following issues and think I know what may be the problem but need all of your expertise to really identify it.

1: i installed a solid state rectifier and it gets warm to hot when installed with no components on

2: When I turned over the motor (with the spark plug wire disconnected as I did not want it to start) the needle on the ammeter went to the negative side of the dial. When I turned it over again, the ammeter slowly went all the way to the negative scale of the gauge

What is going on?

Thanks so much for your help in advance.

Cheers

Bob

How do I advance or retard the spark on a 1930 VL74 that no longer has the hand control on the handlebars? There is a small device on top of the left side of the case just above the clutch actuaor rod is that it? It is a threaded rod that goes into the case, has a spring around it and a right angle clip that looks like a flag on the top? I took a good photo but not sure how to upload it here so pleaaasssee. If you know about this model harley send me your email address so I can email you the picture. I am at bgreene30@aol.com

Thanks,

Geroge,

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure if it's a 541 or 741 but either way I may pass on it. I am just finishing restoring a 63 BSA B40 and was looking for an american bike....something I can get a bloody bolt for at the hardware store!

What Harley would you reccomend from the 30's to 40's for a good restoration project?

Thanks,

Yankee Bob

Hello everyone. Can anyone tell me if a 1941 indian jr scout 541B is a good collectible bike? Were there any major problems with them? I vaguely remember hearing something of the sort. My friends father left him one and trying to help him sort it out. The bike is in Wisconsin.

Thanks in advance.

British Bikes / Rebuilt Engine Start Up Advice Needed
« on: March 22, 2009, 03:46:36 AM »
Hello. I just finished restoring my 63 B40 and was wondering if there is a way to run the oil through the motor prior to startup? Is it like a car so if I put an old distributor shaft in a drill will it circulate the oil? I really don't want it to run dry at all.

HELP and any suggestions on first start up and break in are greatly appreciated.

« on: September 29, 2008, 07:12:53 AM »
Hello. I have a 63 B40 that has a black and chrome gas tank and I need to paint it. Does anyone know where i can get a stencil that lays out the dimensions of where to paint and where leave chrome? What about the just the dims from a reference point? The center wass black, border of the black gold (I believe) and then chrome panels.

Thanks,

British Bikes / Re: Size of BSA Fork Stanchion End Plug
« on: August 19, 2008, 05:55:48 AM »
it seems it should have been 11/16W but it was in between. I ended up chaliking the nut in the vise and turning the top of the stancion with a pipe wrench. Me da's idea and it worked brilliantly. On another note, can you reccomend anyone that makes a complete engine/head gasket set of new materials? Brit gasket in Canada only has them for B44's. Would that be the same for a B40?

Thanks Much.

British Bikes / BSA B40 PISTON NEEDED
« on: May 17, 2008, 07:50:51 AM »
Does anyone have a B40 Piston +040 and the rings and clips that they want to sell? I need one for my 63 BSA.

Compression ratio does not really matter.

Thanks,
