we started the bike for the first time last weekend and what a racket so will come up with some way of decreasing the Db,when i cleaned the silencers out it also was stuffed with chicken wire its nice to know that the exhausts  are original and i have found a repro sales catalogue and the bike has the silencers on ,one other problem was we could not get the bike to fire at first ,when we checked the flywheel and looked where the cam was to co-inside with the points it was out ,we set the points set the engine to TDC ,backed it off 1/4" and checked the flywheel and we needed to set it back anti-clockwise 90o tried the bike and it fired ! could it be that someone has replaced the flywheel from another model ? or have i missed something ,anyway its running
got all the chrome off to be plated sort the baffles out when we get them back getting there slowly but surely

hi fellow bikers ,building a 1934 Excelsior as you know managed to put the rebuild engine in to find it had the wrong flywheel on got it started by subtracting TDC 90o and it fired up could it be the wrong flywheel ,also the silencers had a rattling baffle inside ,looked like an auger about 250mm long the exhaust looks very simlar to a fishtail velo silencer the engine is a Mk14a single villiers with a twin exhaust port ,my question is , are the auger type baffles correct and has anyone come accross them photos to follow

I have been building an excelsior with a mk14a villiers engine air cooled with villiers carb and villiers flywheel I have checked the coil replaced the condenser,points ht lead and plug ,I am getting spark and compression seems ok ,also had carb serviced set the timing of armiture plate but cannot get it started any idea's starting to pull my hair out and i have not got a lot left HELP!

hi R, the points have been checked and new insulating washers fitted should be able to check output on coil ,is it just a case of checking for a circuit when I turn the flywheel i think it may be just down to flywheel position this is the motor fitted to my 1934 excelsior scout as always you seem to come to the rescue for me many thanks I have a small booklet of the villiers engine by C grange can you surgest a better publication for the villiers motors ,you may remember you give me info on my Albion Gearbox which I am glad to say is having a full overhaul and new bushes fitted to try and keep the oil in the dam thing wheels refurbished and new tyres it all seems to be all the money parts now makes a change from all the elbow grease painting  frames and tinware

HELP! coil checked, new condenser ht lead, spark plug, and the flywheel re-magnetised and no spark. what am I doing wrong ?

hi 33d6 and R ,I have ordered a new solid state regulated and having the Dynamo (model E3D-3 LUCAS) fully refurbished and converted to a 2 brush also new battery and other bits like horn and ammeter the guy I bought the bike from has supplied the wiring harness but its a but of a mess.can anyone explain the legend on the main switch ,is it T for tail light ,H for headlight ,D for dynamo , L for lights and SH for ?   Excelsior seemed to be a law unto  themselves but in the 1930,s all they wanted was to try and make a profit from turning out the bikes to the masses , and the fact they stayed in business for so long using parts from all suppliers villiers,blackburn jap and lucas they must have been doing something right   thanks for your help guys

hi thanks very much for the info on the wiring it is fitted with a lucas switch marked with OFF,C,H ,L on the front of the switch and on the rear terminals
sh then a mounting pillar,T ,H,D+,L then another pillar see photo's don't know if this makes any sense

i am a good way on with a rebuild of an Excelsior scout 250 unfortunately the bike has no exsisting wiring and its not my strong point it is a simple system by the look of it head light,tail light,ammeter,dynamo (being rebuilt with modern regulator) Battery and horn .can any electric expert out there give me a quick sketch of a wiring diagram to help  sort it out

its the nuisance with the Excelsior Scout might be getting ahead of myself here but I am trying to find out what colour is used on the petrol tanks of the 1930's range of motorcycles as used on the manxman amongst others back round colour black and the panels RED but what red that is the question I may be over the top but I would like it right.

well guys thanks to you out there the gearbox is back together and seems to be quite smooth ,now the bit on the end has anyone got a diagram or could do a drawing of what the assembly of the clutch fitted to the 4 speed Albion R series with two plates with corks fitted (well they will have when I get them from villiers
(great service by the way) it has a long rod and a small rod about 6mm long and a rod with a disk on the end which I assume presses against the clutch to separate the plates but! there seems to be something missing thats the problem when it comes in a box things like locking washers and nuts I can work out and the parts missing I can make on the lathe providing I know what they are HELP!!

thanks R thats a great help just got the shafts and gears installed back in the casing the only thing know is the clutch do you know what rods control the actuating arm to move the clutch as it is missing and clutch is unasembled at the moment needs corks and bearings will have to get some wine drank over the Xmas to make some corks (only joking) cheers for the info on the 4 speed what is the model number on the 4 speed ?

thanks to everyone for their input I have striped the box and had it cleaned but am having difficultly putting it back together since I come out of hospital after 13 months i have great problems remembering things its either the medication or old age never mind back to important things here are some pics of the Albion gearbox as fitted to the EXCELSIOR Scout 1934 as you say I have seen 3 models of this bike and all had different boxes fitted it looks to be all here but I always find gearboxes a black art (but thats me what do you think lads 3 or 4 speed once again thanks for your help

hi the only reason i thought it was a 3 speed was from the original excelsior literature showed the scout fitted with a 3 speed would you be able to tell if I posted a picture of the internals by the way I live all the way up in Northumberland any help would be much appreciated

Hi i am currently building an Excelsior Scout 1934 it is fitted with a villiers Mk14A air cooled 249cc engine and a Albion 3 speed hand change gearbox with the serial no RN305 AND A PATENT NUMBER 330164 thing is the gearbox is in bits and i need a diagram or a parts manual so i can see if all the parts are there is there anyone out there that knows a bit about Albion Gearboxes
