British Bikes / Norton 16H. Wrong gear lever?

Hi.
Would someone be able to identify if this gear lever is original. You have to lift your foot up and forward about 8 inches to change gear which doesn't seem right and is certainly uncomfortable. I've looked at photos of others and on some the nose of the gearlever droops towards the ground which makes sense.

Hi,
Does anyone know what motorbike is in the photo? I thought maybe a bsa due to the sloping cylinder but it also looks to have clocks on the fuel tank like some Ariels.
This is my grandfather sitting on it so I date it about 80 years ago.
Excuse the quality but the photo is only a few inches square.
