British Bikes / Tap, Tap
« on: August 20, 2022, 10:16:45 PM »
Ater getting the carbs on the 1973 Bonneville to not leak, I took it out for a ride around the block for it's inaugural shakedown.
It flunked.   :-\

The motor starts easily and runs nicely with good acceleration.   Instruments, lights, brakes, etc. work nicely.

Problem is it sounds like someone is tapping on the primary case with a small hammer when you're riding along.  It only does it with the clutch engaged, but the noise seems independent of engine speed or bike speed. It's also a bit irregular in frequency.  Maybe it gets louder on acceleration.

I did put the bike on a jack and run it thru the gears while it was still in the shop.  No sounds coming from the primary case at that time.

Any suggestions on where to start finding this one?

British Bikes / Carb leak
« on: August 09, 2022, 08:36:41 PM »
Trying to put the finishing touches on a 1973 Triumph Bonneville refurbishment.
It's all together, carbs synched as good as I'm gonna get 'em.   Bike runs pretty well.

Problem is on cold start.
But when I push down on ticklers and let up, the gas keeps coming out unless I give each carb a gentle tap.

Says to me the floats are wanting to stick, but it does seem odd that it's both and consistent.

I've done a thorough clean on the carbs, replaced the float needles, cleaned jets, etc.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc.

I'm thinking a belt sheath for a small hammer might work.   :P

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville carb adjustment?
« on: July 24, 2022, 04:47:41 PM »
I am in the ending throes of the serious recommissioning of a 1973 Triumph T140V junkyard dog.  It's looking pretty good.

Now in trying to get it to run properly, it's not being terribly cooperative.

Good news is that after almost 20 years of setting around and an electronic ignition, it started 2nd kick.
Bad news is that it idles like it has a 3/4 race cam.  I've pulled alternating sparkplug wires, while it running, and it struggles and stops when the right plug is disconnected.  That points to something amiss on the left side.  It will accept throttle which leads me to the idle circuit, but the mixture screw seems to have no impact.

I used the initial settings in the  workshop manual to get it started, but any change in those settings doesn't result in any smoothing of the idle.

 What should I do?

Thanks.

I did adjust the throttle cables so both slides move simultaneously.

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville exhaust headers
« on: July 06, 2022, 08:41:30 PM »
I'm putting together a 1973 Triumph T140V Bonneville OIF.

The header pipes seem to just stick into the head without any method of attachment, gaskets, etc.  The parts lists I've looked at don't show any gaskets, etc.

What keeps the pipes tight in the head and not leaking profusely?

Thanks.

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville Wiring
« on: May 29, 2022, 05:14:44 PM »
I'm putting a new wiring harness into a 1973 Triumph Bonneville because somewhere in its past some goob removed most of the old one.

After much head scratching and a few false starts, it's coming together, but one thing I can't intuit out.

Each handlebar switch set has 5-6 wires that have to be hooked up to the harness.

Is that connection made INSIDE or OUTSIDE the headlight shell?

Thanks.

British Bikes / Norton Electra Electronic Ignition
« on: November 08, 2021, 02:11:15 PM »
I recently purchased a Wassel electronic ignition for my 1963 Norton Electra.  To make a long story short, it doesn't fit.

The mounting holes on the Wassel stator are 2 1/4" center to center.  The mounting holes on the Electra are 2 5/8".  Didn't expect that.

Question is has anyone installed an electronic ignition on an Electra and if so, which one?
The NOC lists a Boyer ignition for the Electra.  Anybody used that?

If not too inconvenient, could someone measure the distance between the mounting holes on their Electra to see if they are the same as mine?

Thanks.

British Bikes / Stud Thread size
« on: October 09, 2021, 03:09:24 PM »
I have a 1963 Norton Electra.
One of the breaker point pillar stud bolts has broken off.
I've extracted the remains, refilled the hole, and ordered new studs.

Thing I need to know is the size tap I should use to rethread the hole.

Anybody know that?

Many thanks.

British Bikes / Norton Electra Timing
« on: September 16, 2021, 08:51:17 PM »
I'm trying to set the timing on a Norton Electra and having difficulty.
First of all, I can't find a place to hang a timing wheel.  The drive side of the crankshaft has the rubegoldbergish starter assembly on the end of the shaft, so you can't get to it.
I was thinking of using the end of the points cam bolt and setting it at 15 degrees BTDC of rotation (that's based on the assumption that that shaft is turning at half the speed of the crankshaft).  Is that feasible at all?
Secondly, after setting the proper piston at TDC and backing it down a bit, it doesn't seem to matter how much I rotate the points backing plate, I get no reaction from the test light.
The Electra manual calls for timing to be set at 30 degrees BTDC.

It's been quite a while since I've done this, so what am I missing?

Also the ignition system is a Rooster system that retains the points.

Thanks.

British Bikes / Rooster Ignition
« on: August 14, 2021, 07:54:48 PM »
I have a spark problem.
For the past several months I've been working on refurbishing a 1963 Norton Electra.  It ran great before I started the work that required unhooking part of the Rooster Booster ignition system someone has installed.  These connections I marked carefully and am fairly confident of their correctness.
However upon trying to restart it, I discover I have  no spark at the plugs.
I do have voltage at the breaker points and coil.  Also the lights on the Rooster box light up.  One is a green light (pilot light?) and the other is a white light that flashes when the points close.  I have no idea what that means, but is says electricity is going somewhere.

I don't have a clue what to do next.  There seems to be no Rooster documentation on how to install/troubleshoot the system or any company website.

So I'm turning to the collective wisdom of this forum.

All ideas welcome.

Thanks.

British Bikes / Triumph damper tube end plug
« on: June 27, 2021, 09:44:16 PM »
Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the damper tube end plug found at the bottom of the fork stanchions?

I've soaked it in penetrating oil, used an impact wrench, heated it and even tried a chisel to loosen it.  Hasn't budged.

I surely don't want to buy a whole new stanchion tube so I can replace the end plug.

Thanks.   :-\

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville Ignition Switch
« on: June 02, 2021, 09:48:26 PM »
I recently purchased a 1973 Triumph Bonneville T140V for restoration.
Guy I bought it from said it didn't have an ignition key, which was ok, but on further examination it doesn't have a ignition lock either.  It has the wrong front fork and some other missing pieces, so my question is; If it had an ignition switch, where was it mounted when it left the factory?
Thanks.

British Bikes / BSA B25 with Wassel Vape Ignition
« on: May 07, 2021, 09:20:16 PM »
I was recently riding my 1969 BSA B25 single cylinder motorcycle in which I have installed a Wassell electronic ignition.  It has worked well for a couple of years, but few miles.  But with no warning the bike suddenly stopped.  Examination showed there was no spark. There seem to b no loose or broke wires.
I've used the trouble shooting directions in the Wassell Installation Guide and still haven't discovered the problem.  The following direction Guide is a bit unclear to me:
     2) Using a multi meter check continuity through the stator plate. Set the meter to ohms. The
resistance reading for each coil should be 73 ohms. Connect the meter to the black/white &
black/yellow leads and the combined resistance should be 146 ohms.

I disconnected the plug with the black/yellow and black/white wires, inserted one multimeter probe into one side of the plug going to the stator unit and the other probe to ground.  The black/yellow wire showed NO resistance and the black/white wire showed 122 ohms.  I also checked continuity betwee the black/yellow and the black/white wires and got 212 ohms.
Question is:  Did I do that right?    If so, what does it mean?
Thanks
Ron
ps.  Any other suggestions to solve this will be much appreciated

British Bikes / Wheels?
« on: January 08, 2021, 04:11:28 AM »
I have a question about wheels.
I have a couple of rusted rims, 19 x wm2 and 18 x wm2 in size.
Will there be a problem if I replace them with 2.15 rims?
Thanks.

British Bikes / norton Electra Questions
« on: November 21, 2020, 04:26:21 PM »
I'm starting to restore a Norton Electra and am discovering that documentation seems to be pretty limited.  I have some questions that maybe the experienced Electra fans answer for me.

1.  Where can I find a detailed spare parts list?
The ones I've managed to locate don't have illustrations of body parts and those that are illustrated don't list all the parts and their associated numbers.  The biggest missing examples seem to be oil seals, although the way it leaks I could be persuaded that it doesn't have any.

2.  The gas tank trim in the pictures I've located have some sort of black insert toward the back that covers the attaching screws.  Can anyone tell me what that looks like up close, what it's made of, how it's attached, etc.

Many thanks, in advance.

British Bikes / Norton Owners Club
« on: October 20, 2020, 11:19:42 PM »
I have a question about the Norton Owner's Club.
I'm starting to do some restoration work on a Norton Electra and it seems that the Norton Owners' Club out of England is the "go to" source for many parts.
I was about to join and discovered that there is a group called the Norton Owner's Club of North America.
Are these two affiliated?
More importantly can I buy parts from the NOC if I'm a member of the NOCNA?  Since I live in the United States the latter seems closer to home.
I considered contacting one or both clubs, but there doesn't seem to be any expedient way to do it.

I appreciate any insight.
Thanks.
