British Bikes / Spark eroding valves BSA 1929
« on: October 23, 2019, 03:28:00 PM »
Hi All,

I need to get some slots eroded into my valves for my BSA1929. Got some new valves from BSA Bob? a few years ago but without slots to hold the pin for the valve springs. I'm in the bristol area - tried a company in porttalbot who said they could do it, but have failed to reply to my messages since.

Anyone know of any other options out there?

Many thanks
Rob

British Bikes / Amal type 5/101 carb rebuild (BSAl29)
« on: August 28, 2019, 08:21:59 PM »
Hi All

I'm rebuilding my carb which is an AMAL type 5/101. I believe they only made this one for 1 year, but its pretty similar to the surrounding years.

I have most of the parts and picked up a few extras from AMAL a few years ago.

One issue (if its an issue) is I can't seem to remove the jet block. obviously don't want to do anything forceful as the body is in relatively good condition.

1. do you think I need to remove it to recon the carb?
2. does anyone out there know how-  there seems to be an alignment feature of the part that the main jet screws into. does this plate at the bottom unscrew from the body? does the jet block slide out from the top?

any help would be appreciated.

its off a 1929 BSAL29 if you haven't seen my other posts.

thanks
Rob

British Bikes / BSA L29
« on: August 08, 2019, 10:00:19 PM »
Hi there,

anyone out there got any knowledge of 1920's BSA side valves. I have a BSA l29 that I have had for a few years and haven't touched it for a while. now trying to get my teeth into it again.

One of my first questions is around the ignition, magneto and then lighting setup. The bike I assume needs no battery to start and run, but what does the lighting require? I have no setup for this. I'm assuming some sort of 6v supply (it has a Lucas headlight, not a acetylene headlight).

Sorry if this is a naive question.

thanks

British Bikes / 22g thread size - 5/16 Bsf
« on: May 25, 2012, 07:19:06 AM »
Hi All,

Maybe being really stupid here, but unfortunately i'm of the metric generation, so need a little help! the needle jet on my carb is not as the standard one from Amal, the bore that it fits into is larger than the fit they provide. Its on a type 5 carb so only run for a very short period of time so could have been originally like this or could have been modified at some point to fit a home made jet.

Anyway, the thread on my jet measures at 22G on my thread gauge that i have just purchased off ebay. 22G! whats this! is this refereeing to the TPI, really annoying as all the other sizes give the fractional measurement next to it too. I believe from looking on the internet that this may be a 5/16 bsf thread. Can anyone confirm.

thanks

British Bikes / Control cables - soldering
« on: May 19, 2012, 07:25:59 PM »
Hi All,

Following on from the "how do you like your nuts" thread which digressed into soldering of control cables, as a first timer i need some purchasing advice.

Most of the solder i come across is flux cored (which i understand is not appropriate), but i have found this solder bar on ebay - will this do the job, or anyone know of where i can get hold of the right stuff?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0-5KG-TIN-LEAD-SOLDER-BAR-D-GRADE-BODY-LEAD-PLUMBERS-30-70-FRY-5455-/320868541309?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item4ab541637d#ht_500wt_970

Thanks

1929 bike - what replacement nuts should i be using? I want to keep the bike as authentic as possible - stainless nuts that i've found have been expensive, would nickel plated nuts have been used in this period?

Anybody know of well priced suppliers?

British Bikes / BSA l29 sv 350 valve guides and spring seats.
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:32:22 PM »
Hi,

Sorry another one for you all.....

I think i need new valve guides made, one of the original ones that i have removed looks like its suffered from uneven wear. I see a lot of similar bronze guides on the internet, but do any of the manufacturers make ones to suit the l29? When i come to reset the valve guides, what is the best way to get accurate placement?

The spring seats are also too corroded to re - use, anyone know of a supplier  (being lazy here as I should probably make some).

British Bikes / bsa l29 350 sv crank case welding?
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:25:14 PM »
I hope you can all get a good view in the photo, if you can, you will see a hole in the crank case at the base of the cylinder. Something in the past has obviously worked its way in and been forced by the piston down into the crank case. looks nasty, but not sure if i need to have it patched or not. This is not a sealed unit to the crank case, so will it affect compression? If i do need it welded, anyone know of a welder in the bristol or birmingham area that will confidently weld this casting?

Any help appreciated.

British Bikes / 1929 BSA Engine shaft timing pinion key
« on: April 15, 2012, 06:11:49 PM »
:(so, in moving house and moving all my parts around, i seem to have caused myself a massive headache by not being able to find my engine shaft timing pinion key (part 15-40). Its a comon part across most models of this year (mine is an L29 350 SV). If anyone can help, i'm slightly panicking!

Even if it is provide me with the correct dimensions of the key (however i should be able to measure the slot and work this out) so i can find out about having one fabricating. I would hazard a guess that this will not be easy to fabricate myself as it will need to be hardened steel and ground. However, I have access to grinding facilities so if anyone has done this before i would like to know.

Its a simple woodruff key. thinking about it i can probably buy one from a gears manufacturer.

British Bikes / Bsa l29 crank case gasket material/ thickness
« on: April 15, 2012, 04:09:13 PM »
I've split open my crank case on bsa l29 350 SV and there appears to be some form of disintegrated residue left from a gasket but not enough to determine what sort. can anyone advise what material this gasket would be and what thickness it should be so i can get a new one made up. there is nothing mentioned of a gasket in the parts catalogue.

thanks,

Rob

British Bikes / cylinder valve guide removal bsa 350sv l29
« on: November 21, 2011, 09:23:35 PM »
hi all,

more advice needed!! i feel its better to ask then risk damaging something through ignorance! i need to replace one of the valve spring cups and clean one up, therefore i think i need to remove the guides.

they look like they would press out from the top (by pressing a rod through the valve cap onto the top). can anyone confirm before i start?

i've attached a photo, but not sure if you will be able to make it out from the image.

Thanks,

rob

British Bikes / Amal type 5 amal carb needle jet size?e
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:26:04 PM »
Hi all, another question Bout Carbs. I have just battled and managed to remove the sheared needle jet from my carb. The replacement does not seem to match the one that I rmoved. the replacement was bought on advice of the rep at amal. he looked at the top half of the original jet and decided it was probably home made. now I have removed it I have noticed that the thread is larger diameter than the replacement 106 jet. The 106 also has a longer guide for the needle. do you think that the larger bore could be a mod by the previous owner, in which case I could turn a bush to step the thread up On the 106 or do I have the incorrect needle jet? I will put these questions back to amal as Well. The guy at amal was reading it from an data sheet, so I was hoping one of u might have had experience with these Carbs. It's from a 350 SV BSA l29. thanks, rob

British Bikes / inlet bellmouth for type 5 amal carb
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:45:20 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know where i can get hold of an inlet bellmouth for a type 5 /110 amal carb? Amal don't make anything for the type 5 anymore, so i think it might be a case of striking lucky in someones shed. Failing that, if anyone out there machines them at a reasonable price i might be interested. I could provide a drawing.

Thanks

Rob
