British Bikes / Manx Grand Prix 2013
« on: August 30, 2013, 10:18:27 PM »
Just got back home, the weather was as good as any Manx GP I have ever been to, however it has changed and not for the better. This year the Island was full of 'Power Rangers' on Jap rockets blasting about and notably less on older machines. Tony East and his cronies have made it a much more commercial event and all prices seemed to have increased dramatically. I like the new races (Classic TT) but I can do without the commercialism. Did anyone else go? What did you think, I would be interested to know.

The Classic Biker Bar / Obvious

An American photographer on vacation was inside a church in Oldham taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '£10,000 per call'.

The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 you could talk to God. The American thanked the priest and went along his way.

Next stop was in Manchester... There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Oldham and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 he could talk to God.

'O.K., thank you,' said the American.

He then travelled to Blackburn, Darwen, Burnley, Rochdale and Littleborough. In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '£10,000 per call' sign under it. The American, upon leaving Lancashire decided to travel to Yorkshire to see if Yorkshiremen had the same phone.

He arrived in Todmorden, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read '50 pence per call.'

The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father, I've travelled all over Lancashire and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to heaven, but in Lancashire the price was £10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?'

The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Yorkshire now, son. It's a local call.'

British Bikes / Norton jubilee
« on: June 03, 2013, 11:48:39 PM »
I had a jubilee too many years ago to remember for a short while. You would have thought I should have learned my lesson, but no. I recently bought a project with a view to making a useable little bike, unlike the one I had way back when. Apparently its fork arrangement is the same as the Francis Barnett Cruiser 80, does anyone know much about these.. other than they must have been pretty grim, are they still available or parts etc?

Cheers
Frank

British Bikes / Norton gone...
« on: April 22, 2013, 04:42:57 PM »
Just sold my MkIII 850 Commando proddy racer. Feel a bit miffed now, but my wrists, back, knees and arse are rejoicing. A friend has been nagging me to part with it for a while now so it's gone and there's an empty space in the garage  ;)

British Bikes / New carb for ES2
« on: March 01, 2013, 08:53:10 PM »
I just ordered a new 276 Amal carb for my 1950 Norton ES2 from Burlen. Does anyone have any experience in dealing with them? They claim to set it up as standard to the model (jets, needles etc), just wondered if it's as good as it sounds. Mind you, it ought to be for £277 all in!

Just been out for a blast round on the Rocket, lovely and sunny, but I have just seen a brass monkey looking for a welder! So back home... cup of beef tea and a defrost . At least it keeps the battery right.

The Classic Biker Bar / Abrupt end
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:19:12 AM »
Well it looks like mother earth has drawn a sudden end to this years motorcycling, well for me at least.... its white over here. I know some hardy souls brave the snow but I've never been that courageous (foolhardy?) since a motorbike stopped being my only mode of transport. Does it put the jankers on it for everyone else here?

British Bikes / Registering a Raleigh Runabout
« on: October 16, 2011, 03:05:57 PM »
Yesterday a friend called to see me, he has just got a barn find Raleigh Runabout without any paperwork. The bike carries its original registration number (FWW 33C) and comes originally from the Dewsbury area in West Yorkshire and is, so he informs me, an RM9 model.

His problem is that to get a new logbook for the bike he needs to fill in the frame number on the relevent DVLA forms and when he has looked for the said number he can only find 3 digits and he believes it should have more.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of this (other than weigh it in for scrap, which was my first suggestion).

Frank
