British Bikes / Monobloc
« on: May 10, 2013, 08:57:20 AM »
1957 B31. Will not restart after being run to normal operating temperature and switched off and then allowed to cool a little. All other starting is fine. All jets are correct and the needle is on the second notch. However on a non start when turning the engine with the plug removed no petrol/air mixture can be felt through the plug hole; yet the carb has petrol.
There is a spark on ever plug used and the magneto is fine.
Any pointers much appreciated please. :)
Cheers

British Bikes / DB31 crankcases
« on: October 23, 2012, 11:09:47 AM »
Hi guys; can anyone advise please.
A mate of mine has just rang me looking for a 7\8w tap. Claims its for a mates DB31 crankcases. It sounds to me like the sump plug; but thats a lot bigger than the sump plug on mine. Is there a thread that size on the crank cases? :)
Cheers
Neil

Japanese Bikes / Unleaded
« on: May 29, 2012, 09:49:34 AM »
Jap bikes from the mid 70's are supposed to run uk on unleaded without adjustment or modification; depending on who you speak too of course.

I remember when we were running new Jap 4's etc in the 70's; the dealers told use to use 2 star.

My 750K7 and LC both run fine on bog standard unleaded. The LC tank has remained ok but the K7 tank did corrode internaly.

Now; I've been told that 2T's shouldn't be ran on unleaded because they overheat; yet mine and others are fine. Also a 750F2 apparantly runs better on super unleaded. His explination for this is that the F2 has 70 odd horeses as opposed to the F1 and K series 67; I draw my own conclusion to that.

Whadda you guys think?????

British Bikes / Unleaded fuel

One of the great things about this forum is the depth of knowlege of the members and their differing experiences and points of view.

I used to run my bike on original 4 star then moved onto avgas when 4 star became unavailable.

About three years ago I took the concious decision to use unleaded without any additives. I do use the bike but don't abuse it. It runs fine and the valve clearences have been ok. The tank has also remained sound without rust developing.

With some bikes this is not always the case.

What have other people found?

British Bikes / Fastners

In view of comments made about the use of stainless steel fastners on motorcycles; I thought it might be interesting to establish the majority and minority view point.

British Bikes / Ariel full width hubs
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:45:13 AM »
I am working on the brakes of a 1957 B31 with Ariel full width hubs.
I read recently that not all Ariel full width hubs are the same ie the hubs on a Norton might be different to say this BSA etc; even though they appear similar.
Looking at the BSA parts book a "Brake lever and camshaft spindle assy" is listed. Interestingly on this bike the lever and cam assy are two seperate parts. ::)
The B31 is of unknown history; so it might be, if the above is true that the hubs were once fitted to a different marque.
The brakes work fine, just curious thats all. ;D
Anyone shed any light.
