British Bikes / Triumph t140 heli coil
« on: July 05, 2017, 07:52:08 PM »
Many years ago a friend of mine (claimed) he had his old Bonneville spark plug thread drilled  out and heli coiled with the head still attached to the barrel, by pushing a greased length of cloth( to catch the swarf)into the combustion chamber (though the spark plug hole) it was drilled to the correct size then  heli coiled, the tang was somehow removed then job done, is this really possible because mine needs doing on the left pot.The bike was running really well, I wish I had left it be!

British Bikes / Best oil for a triumph Bonneville t140
« on: March 20, 2017, 07:39:44 PM »
My bike is currently running very well however when I pull the clutch in from cold there is a hell of a clunk and sometimes it's stalls the bike when starting off from cold , when the engine is hot I simply place at Tie wrap over the clutch lever to keep the clutch free  and to prevent it from sticking , I know this is not a long-term solution and wonder if there is  something on the market that will alleviate the sticking clutch problem as I am finding it difficult to change gear no matter how I adjust the clutch . I have considered changing the oil  in the primary drive side  to a more slippery oil maybe a semi synthetic .

British Bikes / Charging system T140e change over model
« on: August 10, 2016, 11:08:34 AM »
The  charging circuit  is only making 12.8 volts on my T140  Bonneville at the battery  terminals at about 4000 rpm and as soon as I switch the lights on the engine dies  i've checked the Earth terminals and I all seems well there the only thing I can think of is the alternator is faulty or there is a problem with the  rectifier , because this bike is a change over model there doesn't seem to be any suitable wiring  diagrams in the manuals , The bike is fitted with its original rectifier  and original Zena, are only two wires coming up from the alternator a green yellow and a green white if anyone has any ideas I will be grateful . Otherwise the five runs  really well . The bike has a positive earth.

The throttle slide on my Mk11 carburettors has the number 2928 imprinted on the bottom and also a number 3,  I am running the correct main jets 200's  and also the correct pilot jets  The machine is even with the throttle stop screw at its lowest setting where it doesn't touch the slider is  running at 1200 rpm and I cannot get it any lower  even when it is at lowest setting where it doesn't touch the slider it's running at 1200 rpm . The pilot air screw is 2 1/2 times out from full in position, the  needle is set in the middle, The only thing I can think of is that the cutout on the slider is too big for standard Road going T140E. I should  also point out that the carb rubbers  are brand-new and the carburettors have only done 200 miles from new .

British Bikes / Throttle cable route for a T140 Bonnie
« on: July 26, 2016, 06:26:19 PM »
Does anyone know the correct throttle cable route for a T140v Bonneville , The bike originally had American Export Bars on It, i have since changed them for the more suitable western style bars however I would like to know the correct route for the cable , I have noticed there is a rubber Gromit just forward of the petrol tank and behind the headstock on the right hand side does the cable go in there.

British Bikes / Poor parts service and knowledge
« on: February 15, 2015, 07:55:41 PM »
I dipped my toes into restoring a Triumph T140 a couple of years ago and expected a great parts service from the many expert parts dealers on line and at the shows , however my experience has been far from good , even though the machine is bog standard with matching numbers the amount of wrong or defective parts I have been sent beggars belief I wont go into details because I have just had another episode with a well known parts supplier [now sorted by myself after much hassle] the point I guess I am trying to make is if you see new old stock British parts I would buy them even though they will be more expensive . I am sure that some of this sites members will have had positive dealings with parts dealers but I am afraid that much of the  stuff they sell is [expensive]  poor quality, or just plain crap. Most of us work hard for our money and don't like being short changed, I should point out that I have been restoring bikes for 25 years now and am by no means a novice.
