Japanese Bikes / Oil leak Honda CB 550 four K
« on: December 28, 2010, 06:43:35 PM »
Hi,

I have just finnished rebuilding my HONDA CB550 FOUR K engine (top end only) I am plagued with oil leaks and have redone it 3 times now and it is still leaking oil when I ride any distance.I cannot see exactly where the oil is coming from and it is driving me nuts.Is there anyone out there who has had a similar problem and if so how did you solve it.The oil seems to be coming from the front of the engine at the top and running down.

I have overhauled my cylinder head and honed my cylinders and put new rings in.I cant get the bike to idle properly now,it keeps surging like its getting too much air.Could this be the new rings not bedded in yet and it is drawing too much air past the rings from the crank case.Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi Tony, I done exactly as you told me but without success, I still had too much travel on the lever and the brake felt spongy yet I was certain I had bled them properly.
I have however found the problem. The spur on the brake lever that pushes the master cylinder plunger is quite badly worn ,so I tried putting a spacer in to see if it helped (5mm thick),re bled the system and hey presto good solid brakes. So could see if I can get a new lever and check how much longer it is or just leave the spacer in as I made it up specially and there is no chance it can fall out.
My next mission is to get the bike to idle properly as I removed the carbs and cleaned them out but I am not sure where to start resetting them on the bike. I have the bike running but the idling seems very sensitive I dont really know what I'm doing, any suggestions

I'm rebuilding a CB 550 four.I am busy re assembling the engine and I've just put a new cam chain tensioner in.I am not sure if the body of the tensioner is supposed to slide or clip into a hole or slot down at the bottom inside the engine, the Haynes repair manual is not very clear on this. Is there anyone out there who can give me a bit of advice?
                                   Thanks Sascot
