European and Other Bikes / Re: 2V Jawa Speedway Engine Piston Seized
« on: April 03, 2015, 07:50:15 PM »
I've been cleaning the cases up and had a look at the barrel. The con rod was bent and the piston seized in the bore.  The piston has damaged the barrel also the main bearing was seized at just before tdc. Still the cases are fine which was the bit that was wantedd  ;)

After many attempts I finally got it out - I put it under a press and it took 260 Tons to get it moving - unbelievable!! I set it up on blocks and put a punch on top of the piston. Piston is a write off and there is some damage to the barrel, but all the guy really wants is the cases anyway. Sad there was some damage however, it was one of the toughest jobs I've done on an engine.

Thanks to all those who offered ideas.

Hi All,

I have been asked if I could take a look at an old speedway engine or a guy who is restoring the bike. The engine is a ESO engine but the piston is seized solid in the bore and has been since the 1970s. The engine seized up and the rider took the engine out and replaced it and left it until now. I have tried parafin, Gizer and Gunk but to not avail. The barrel is lose but but obviously cannot be removed. I have tried a wooden block and hammer but have stopped after the blows were getting harder! Any suggestions greatly received. I have considered machining the piston away but was wondering if the is a non destructive method out there.

Thanks

British Bikes / T140E Grab rail / Luggage rack
« on: March 04, 2012, 10:44:02 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know how to tell what luggage rack/grab rail was fitted to a particular bike or model. I bought a grab rail a couple of years back but it doesn't fit. When I fitted it the holes for the rear of the rail do not line up. It does have 2 holes drilled by the rear light so I am looking something like that. The bike is a 1979 T140E (NA- Oct 78). Whenever I tried to get cycle parts during the rebuild I was always faced with the usual chin stroking from the triumph suppliers as it is a change-over year model.

Any clues please - I have already made a mistake once and am not keen to repeat the expensive experience

Cheers

Although I have no knowledge of the Brunette, I do remember going to Burnetts for spares for my James Captain K7 which was fitted with a Villiers 8E engine. I rode it on the old disused Portsmouth Airport in the late 70's. I can remember them opening late after lunch with me waiting patiently outside and then waiting inside while one of the brothers went off to find some clutch corks for me (we always said that if they went upstairs then that was it.) After a long while he returned to the counter and said "Yes young man, can I help you?"  I gave up after that and went to George Hodges who had Villiers spares from dealing with the old Invacars.

Things I do remember are the young bloke (40 years older than me) An Excelsior Talisman twin which had never been registered, an NVT Rambler an Easyrider and a Suzuki X7 which again hadn't been registered. There was also a Norton in there - don't remember what it was but it looked big to a young lad! There were all sorts of stories about the cellar being full of Series 1 Lambrettas which had been recovered from a ship which had sunk and that there were Broughs and other old veteran bikes stashed away. One of the Brothers ( the one who went first told me of his father who had the registration BK2 which was the second vehicle registered in Portsmouth - the Lord Mayor has BK1.

Always a frustrating time visiting the shop but what I would given to have a wander around and alas I wasn't around when the shop closed dow.

British Bikes / Re: T140E Timing Side bearings.

L.A.B,

Many thanks for your help - i was assured it was the crank for my bike so I guess I will ask them to swap it over. It's a shame i have just renewed the sludge trap which wasn't easy - had to machine the plug out. So lets see what happens next.

thanks again

British Bikes / T140E Timing Side bearings.
« on: October 16, 2011, 02:27:40 PM »
Hi All,

Could anyone help again please? I need to change the main bearing on the timing side as the crank I have just got has a smaller 1 1/8 bearing. The old one is a 6306 bearing but the internal diameter is now too big at 30mm. Does anyone know the part number please or can explain why this is different.

Grateful for any help

Thanks

British Bikes / Re: TSS Crankshaft

hi Esometisse,

Reg Allen has cranks and Hawkshaw have them listed. The price difference on Hawkshaws is £200 - not to be sniffed at. The crank in my bike has the timing slots in the wrong place so i was thinking about a replacement - basically buying myself out of trouble but at £500 plus VAT for a second hand T140 crank takes some convincing the missus.

Thanks

Hi,

Does anyone know the difference between an T140 crankshaft a TSS crankshaft. I was looking the other day and the prices are quite different with the TSS being a lot less. Are they interchangeable?

Thanks

Hi All,

I am struggling with my 1979 (Oct 1978) T140E. I have reassembled the bike and the the bike won't start. The only thing I can think of is that I may have the timing wheels on the wrong woodruft key. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me if there is a way of telling. I have just joined this site again after a couple of years working abroad and have a new user name as I have a new email address.
Thanks for any help
