Just out of curiosity, is the old 'solderless nipple' still obtainable ?
Always had one or two 'in me tool roll'. They were a dam good bodge.

« on: December 27, 2006, 04:12:53 AM »
Have found an old photo of myself aged around 4 years old seated on my fathers ES2. It was a plunger model circa 1950? Reg No was MWE 845. I would love to know if the bike is still out there and would be delighted if it is still being ridden. Help anyone ???

These recordings were made by Stanley Schofield, the narrator was Graham Walker [father of the legendary Murray Walker].
I will have a search around and see if I can find any info, will let you know if I do.

British Bikes / W E Platts, Sheffield Speedway rider of the 20's
« on: June 27, 2009, 11:27:05 PM »
I have been contacted by the grandson of 'Gus' Platts ,an old 20's/30's speedway rider in Sheffield. He is looking to locate his grandads old BSA dirt tracker and has heard it is in a motorcycle museum 'somewhere in the south of England'. I myself saw a photograph of the restored machine round about 1988, so I know for fact it was restored, but its whereabouts unknown. Could anyone help with any info? We would be most gratefull for any help.

British Bikes / Re: British 500 2 stroke GP racer

The scrapping of this project shows the attitude of the major British manufacturers in the 60s. Full marks to a small outfit like DMW, but obviously they could only afford to go so far on their own. 70bhp and a decent rider[we had loads of these in the 60s] should have provided a good enough start.
If Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki had shown the same interest in racing as the Brits then we would never have got past vertical twins.

EUREKA!!!! I've found it. It was the DMW Typhoon started in 1964 using 2 Starmaker engines. [The Sparton threw the old braincells into confusion]
If anybody's interested just do a search for DMW Typhoon.    ;D

There's mention of a 500 two stroke single here, could that be it?http://www.race.iofm.net/d.htm

The bike was definately a twin and may have been based on two Villiers Starmaker engines. The last time I heard the bike mentioned was in the mid 80's when I was told it was or had been kept at Dawson Harmsworth in Sheffield[the Astralite wheels people]

A project was started circa early 70's to produce a competitive 500 GP racer. I seem to remember a bike being produced- a 500 2 stroke twin, but then the memory gives up on me. Does anyone else remember this project ? Am I thinking of the QUB/ Seeley or is senility catching up on me ??
