British Bikes / Re: BSA Bantam misfire and sparking pionts.

This is a very good example of a new part is not always a good part. I don't know how many times I've heard "I replaced that so that can't be the problem". In over 50 yrs. of working on engines I've learned not to take anything for granted. I could come up with a long list of new parts that were faulty. Also included here are electrical components that test good but fail in use. If a part is suspect but tests good I like to replace it with a known good part like from a good running engine and see if that cures the problem. Process of elimination. Find out what's wrong  by finding out what isn't wrong.

The Classic Biker Bar / Re: Ebay UK

Some listings say ships worldwide, customs services and international tracking provided.  I bought a complete engine and within 10 days it was at my door.  The seller did not charge any extra fees so I assume if there were any they were included in the shipping cost.  It is just so rare to find someone that will ship to the US but it must not be a big deal as the seller that I bought it from stated that worldwide shipping, including the US was available. It was shipped through Parcel force with a tracking number. From Parcel Force it was transferred to the USPS and I signed for it when it arrived. No muss, no fuss, no bother.

The Classic Biker Bar / Ebay UK

I live in the US and like to check ebay uk for bike stuff and have bought a few things. However, lately it has become an exercise in frustration as so many of the sellers will not ship to the US. Does anyone know the reason for this? A lot of times I would have paid more than the final bid but they won't ship it to me. The US was a large market for the UK bike industry, now no one wants to ship parts to us.

Thanks for the replies. That helps a lot. What was used to move the shift cable? Was there a lever of sorts or a twist grip? Sorry for the questions that may be elementary to some but I am not at all familiar with these engines. Thanks.

I'm 69 and live in MN USA. During the summer I ride nearly every day. A big problem here is deer. Every year a number of bike riders are killed from colliding with them. Luckily I've never hit one but have had a number of close calls. Combine that with the idiots driving cars these days and riding is mostly a matter of survival. I long for the old days when riding was a lot more enjoyable but I'm still happy to be able to get around on two wheels.

British Bikes / Villiers id help needed
« on: December 26, 2015, 02:15:03 AM »
I just discovered this site and this is my first post. I live in MN USA and have a small collection of bikes. I just bought a single cyl. Villiers engine that I was told was from a James Comet. It has an exposed flywheel and 2 speed cable operated transmission. There are numbers stamped on the engine, three marks that I can't make out followed by A1714. I'd like to establish the approximate year of manufacture if possible. Any help appreciated. Thanks
