Have you thought about Spark-erosion ? Try Googling it.

If you've been able to get the engine out of the frame, a barrel of diesel for a month is the traditional loosener.

Hello Herc,

Rob van Meel does reprints of the Instruction book and Parts book (for the WD contracts at least).

Herc,

The specification does look very close to that of the War Department machines and a number of civilian bikes were impressed for military service. Perhaps this one missed the Ministry Inspector's stamp ?

The published contract information doesn't include this motor number but there are gaps.  Have you found a frame number ?

The saddles have a German look. Has the bike turned up in Continental Europe ? If so, it could well be one of the 20,000 plus motorcycles that the British Forces abandoned in May / June 1940, many of which were used locally afterwards.

Have you tried scraping the paint in odd places to see if you can find any khaki green or, just possibly, pre-war R.A.F. blue ? If it's from a Military contract and it's never been shot-blasted then there must be some original paint somewhere such as inside the headlamp or tool box etc.

Another clue might just be the light switch. If it has a "T" position (tail light only) that could hint at some military history although I'm not certain that early Model Ds would have had the military switchgear.

Rich.

Most of the big jumbles have sellers with bags of 1/4" and 5/16" cycle if you don't mind cad. plated.

It is more expensive than that nasty coarse ISO metric but not silly money.

Motorcycle manufacturers were known for their use of "specials" so there are lots of things which are only available through the specialists.

Nice pictures :)

Was your Grandfather CQMS with the West Surreys ? It looks like the "Mutton Lancers" badge on his cap.

The bike is certainly a WM20 and would have been quite new at the time.  C5213784 (I think) was part of contract S2603 for 8000 machines numbered C5207518 - C5215517 which was not completed until July 1944.

The vice mounted on the truck tailgate is a nice touch.

I don't think that the earlier bike is a Rudge. It looks Triumph to me but if so, there are plenty of Triumph experts here to advise the model.

Have you thought about asking the Norton Owners Club to do a factory records check ? They should be able to confirm the specification or if anything extra was fitted. Well worth joining anyway !

By the way, that's a nasty crack that you've got to deal with there, isn't it ? I would suggest that running over the area with an acetylene torch would be the best method of making sure that it doesn't appear again - Be careful that you don't ignite any unburnt exhaust gases though ;)

Do the engine and frame numbers begin WM20 or KM20 ?

The steel footrests and offset speedo look ex-WD. Mudguards are non-standard. Fuel tank is the early de-Luxe type.

There is a dedicated website for WM20s

I don't think that you'll find a "gasket set" for pre-war Norton models as they are a more modern invention.

The 1937 motor wouldn't have a lot. Your head joint is just lapped isn't it ? There should be a paper base gasket but that is easy to make.

I have a 1937 parts list covering all models. Let me know if you need any info from it.

Well spotted that man ! It didn't click with me although I did think that it was rather well finned.

If Bjlees is reading this, he really ought to let us know the engine number. My "not a lot" comment might leave me with egg on my face :-[

The short answer is probably "not a lot"

The disc wheel looks to be Suzuki, the twin leading drum has a competition tyre on but looks modified.

The incomplete engine with separate cylinders looks to be AJS / Matchless probably a 500 (Is there a number ?)

The two fibreglass tanks are aftermarket accessories probably to fit the Featherbed frames but fire scares in the sixties and seventies plus the detrimental effects of modern fuel (they melt !) means that they are not sought after.

From memory and looking at the crankcases, I think an Italian motori Minarelli unit. I'm not sure precisely which other makes used the horizontal cylinder though.

The better aligned and balanced your components are, the sweeter it will be and the motor will have an easier life.

I don't know how similar the Sloper crank is to later BSA items but the general principles should be the same.

Henk Joore's WM20 site has a well written article by Dave Plumb. It might give you some useful pointers.

I can't see any flat on the top tube to clear the cam box and the frame has the road chassis headstock gussets. My guess would be a twin frame that has been used on the track, hence the number brackets.
