I'm sure it would have filtered through if he had gone Ian. He's obviously getting on now. Jerry would know, if you've any way of getting in touch.
Dave.

Try this link. Also you could try to find a character called Sgt. Woodie (Paul Wood) on facebook; he's an authority. Be careful, he bites. ;D

I've come in late here, but has anyone suggested pressing the rod out? Hitting a rod or spindle does tend to expand it.

Yes, we learned about bikes by taking them to bits and putting them back together. If you didn't get them running, you couldn't go to work.

Several BSA unit twins had tachos, You would need a parts book for a Lightning or Spitfire to work out what parts are required.

He did say he needed parts to get it "up and running". However you're quite right that the parts should be identified.

Good tip, but if it's been standing many years I'd strip the carb, especially as you say you've got a good spark. Fresh fuel goes without saying.

Just spotted your post and that's what my manual says as well. Be careful with the rocker cover nuts/studs. It's very easy to pull the studs out of the rocker cover. Don't ask how I know this.

A bloke on another site recommends the Frost product, but I can't remember any details.

Judge for yourself on a bike with a tested top speed of 83mph in 1950. 80mph in third BTW.

And in the 60s/70s it was the 250 that was the base for all larger BSA singles.

I don't know myself, but the front wheel mounting should be a clue. Unless it's a bitsa.

Also make sure the rear sprocket is in line with the chain (as best you can). This will at least tell you if the wheel is correctly located in the frame.
