British Bikes / Fantasy dating: a "1914" Excelsior Villiers for sale
« on: August 20, 2023, 12:10:28 PM »
We've talked quite a lot about vintage Excelsiors here, so when I saw a "1914 Excelsior Junior" for sale on ebay UK (actually just spruiking its sale at an upcoming Iconic auction) I was interested. The bike has a 269 Villiers engine and a Burman 2-speed box with ks. Very pretty indeed. "Pioneer Certificate eligible (but not included)" they say.

The only problem is it's not 1914.

When the same bike was sold in 2014 by Bonhams it was a "c1920 Excelsior" and "Offered with V5C (incorrectly registered 1914) for its Warwickshire number."

When it was sold again by H&H in 2017 it had magically become "1914 Excelsior Junior", with "PLEASE NOTE: This motorcycle dates from 1914 and not as previously stated."

Sell it again in 2023 and it's a "1914 Excelsior Junior" and "Pioneer Certificate eligible (but not included)".

For the record, in March 1919 Excelsior's first post war model was an Excelsior Villiers, with a "flat" tank, and the Motor Cycle stated, "This is the first time an Excelsior has been marketed with a Villiers engine." At the end of 1919 Excelsior announced that their lightweights for 1920 would have sloping tanks. And a 269cc Villiers with a "B" prefix would be a Mk III, built in 1920-21?

Why is memory so short? Where has the expertise gone?  Who was the genius who ignored many clues to redate the bike at 1914? Nice bike, though.

I wonder if the bolt should be a breather? Earlier JAPs were very clever in how their engines breathed, and the timing chest was vented directly to the atmosphere. Oil will be forced out randomly if there is no method to relieve excess pressure from the cases/timing chest. I know all about the early engines (where venting the crankcase will cause the entire oiling system to fail), but unfortunately I don't know the details of the later oiling systems, other than to say "be careful of what you vent and what you don't".

Good plan re doing the seat first. It's a Messinger No. 1 - much sought after in the US for various Indian/Harley machines - but don't forget to paint it black! Nice restoration in the Invincible in the photo.

Well at least it's a very good base for restoration, unlike some of the abominations (particularly "Australian made" bikes) we often see on ebay. The difficult part is transforming it from its tired and incomplete current state into a complete running bike. The worst bit is the the dip in value when it gets unbolted into a pile of little parts on the workshop floor! Good luck to the buyer - happy to help with info but unfortunately I have none of the missing parts.

Cheers

I feel a bit nostalgic, but well under control. $9100 with a couple of hours to go.

Yes, it's just like 99% of old motorcycle engines.

I don't know what the problem bolt does: I assume that holding the head and cylinder down is left to the four main studs, which are suitably symmetric, in which case is the problem bolt just filling a hole used for an oil inlet or breather? If it turns, what happens if you turn it and pull it up? There is no way it has a nut underneath inside the timing chest.

That's probably a good buy if you can register it and ride it as a club bike. No problem at all until you come to sell it on.

I know almost nothing about this one, although I did discover a Lilac (or Le Mans) engine in a box "out the back" of the motorcycle wreckers in Abbottsford c1979! I'm surprised so many made it to the road in Victoria.

Looking at the papers, I can find nothing, but a short article in Old Bike Australia https://www.pressreader.com/australia/old-bike-australasia/20140601/281573763773939 includes a recollection that they were sold by LeMans Motors.

/A on the KT engine wouldn't be 1925 ??

Was there any difference over the years ?
No front brake in 1923 was normal.
A few years later would be a bit of a sales non-feature ?

Woops, overlapped.

/A is 1925.
No front brake on any Invincible, I believe. The front fork is a local copy of the c1920 Excelsior/Henderson, and not well suited to brakes. (I'm wary on being definitive about Invincible JAPs, since the last ones were assembled from parts - despite most of the parts being built c1923, the last new Invincible was advertised in Jan 1930!)
With no front brakes, the later ones had a better rear brake, with both internal shoes and a contracting band. Very modern - just like an Indian in 1911!
Changes were small over the years: on this one you can see "late" features like the different drip feed and mechanical oil pump on the magneto drive. In 1925 it would have had an alloy primary case, instead of the pressed steel on the original, but this seems to be missing. Some of the very late ones used well-based rims and wired-on tyres, instead of the 28x3 BE on this one.

The cam is in there, so some hope there are followers too. I don't think there's anything impossible about the rebuild, but it is a really big job. Still, it has some really hard-to-find bits. Fun for someone.

Very nice, but a huge restoration project - even the flywheels seem to have vanished from the engine.

I had a funny experience reading the description - sounded good for a change. Then I realised I wrote it - quoted from my website. Numbers look good for a 1925 Invincible JAP, so probably an original bike.

I'm having the Series A Comet: https://online.doningtonauctions.com.au/m/view-auctions/catalog/id/139

Just one of the many options that seem more palatable than the ebay Vincent! https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334961527827

Bumped into this Series C advertised by a dealer for $AU97,000.

https://www.justbikes.com.au/motorcycles-for-sale/1950-vincent-rapide-series-c-road/JBFD5260602

Said to be matching numbers, original bike. Surely the ebay bike could not be worth more than 1/2 to 2/3 of the price for a "proper" one? Currently at $AU48,000, but as it's "private bidders"...

"The bike is sold on an 'as is / where is' basis with all faults. Bidders must satisfy themselves with the condition of the bike, its provenance, originality and the restoration work required before bidding. There are no refunds."

Not for the inexperienced or the faint-hearted! Provenance? None.

I'd be quite confident that if you tried to register this bike in South Australia - even for club registration - they would knock it back on the basis of the dodgy stampings. A big gamble, and I assume the offers for the bike will reflect this.
