OMG - a Stafford Scooter with a Rumaken magneto! I don't have any info, but I have a friend who likes pathetic early motorcycles with little magnetos, and he can most likely help. Send me a PM (or better and email) using the icons at left and I'll put you in touch.

Post a photo please!

The date is January 1936, but a photo would help with the ID.

I found this lying about - any idea what it is from? Both pivot points are threaded, and on one side the lug below the cross member is machined for a round peg (to extend past exhausts or whatever) held in place with a bicycle-like cotter pin.

The two side castings/forgings are labelled F5346 and F5347 on the inside.

Thanks in advance,

Leon

Well done R! A very obscure motorcycle, but a cute one.

There is (of course!) a Motorconfort site with all the brochures year by year http://www.motoconfort-u54c.com/e107_plugins/autogallery/autogallery.php?show=Motoconfort%2FLes%20publicites and it looks like tele fork and plunger rear was a first for 1950. The model is a 125cc four stroke with side valves - not a configuration used much - if at all - in the UK. At first look I thought it was a two stroke.

I'm sure that the Motoconfort people can give an exact date.

Hi Costas,

It's quite possible that Normans were sent to Crete as Roamers after the war. Norman used the Roamer name for bicycles as well, and there again the machines were the same except for the name.

Have fun with the bike.

Wow - there's a Norman Club: http://normanmotorcycles.org.uk

Have a look at the brochure for the 1951-55 Model D.

Hi Costas,

Nice little bike! We have had some discussions that relate to Roamer/Rambler/Norman motorcycles:

Have a read of these and see if there is anything useful. WHat country is the bike in?

Cheers

Lovely bike. Interesting that the rear brake cam is in opposite positions in the two photos, even though everything else looks identical.

Andy: Can you tell us anything about the "rider" and the dog?

I don't know. There are some unusual things about your fork that match exactly the Belgian Sarolea:

1. the central fork spring that is wound small at the top, but remains larger at the bottom
2. the mounting holes immediately below the top for spindle
3. the frictions dampers with six-pointed star washers and butterfly thumbscrews
4. the mounting point in front of the lower fork spindle for the fixed damper plate
5. the brake anchor on the right side of the fork...

It could be something other than Sarolea - perhaps they bought the fork in from another manufacturer - but I'm way outside of my comfort zone talking about mid 1930s Belgian motorcycles! I don't recognise it as anything British, but I could be wrong.

Cheers

Mirko,

The front fork on your bike is BSA; or was BSA. It has been made longer at some time, probably to make a "chopper".

Hi JFerg,

I found a pic of the bike from the early 1970s. It was then fitted with Harley/Castle front forks, different exhaust, etc. It looks more "GP" now, but I think the fork, front wheel, and other details are still not quite right, even though the paint and plate are flawless!

Yes for such an unusual engine there's a good argument to have it out and running, rather than just sitting on a bench. The problem is that these composite machines tend to very quickly take on an identity that arguably they are not entitled to. I doubt the card at Sammy Miller's museum tells the true story of the bike.

Cheers

Sorry Murdo - I was referring to the spelling on the petrol tank of the nickel-plated GP, where the sign writer has gone with Grindley!

Thanks to Howard's Flickr site https://www.flickr.com/photos/flattank_motorcycles/5007131776/, here's a Grindlay Peerless Barr & Stroud from the 1926 GP catalogue. Interesting to compare with the ex-Beckham Sammy Miller machine.
