British Bikes / Re: excelsior water cooled engine
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:15:27 PM »
I know of two water cooled HRD's that survive, one was restored a few years ago in the South of England, and the other one was awaiting restoration when I was offered it for sale 10 years ago for £5K (wish I had bought it now, but that's hindsight). SOS numbers I think most SOS's made survive, between them Alan Curtis and John Guy in the UK seem to have several watercooled examples.

HRD (yes they made a lightweight for about a year) and SOS also used the same water cooled engine and pressure fed lubrication system. Regards, Martin

British Bikes / Re: BSA S27 Handlebar Rubbers
« on: April 11, 2011, 07:51:58 PM »
Many years ago my Father had an S27 and it had the straight John Bull type handlebar rubbers together with the inverted levers.

For the vintage grips try Dial Patterns (Vintage Grips) http://www.dialpatterns.co.uk/grips.html.

For plain foot rest rubbers try either Jim Hunter Engineering http://www.barnstormers.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Jeff-Hunter-PDF.pdf (details on a NZ website but JJim's son Jeff is based in the UK. Alternatively try Vintage Replica in the Czech Republic http://www.vintage-replica.cz/katalog1E.htm

Well said Yebbut, ditto from me too.

Don't ask for help and then throw your teddies out of the pram when people don't drop everything and come running. It won't win you friends on this or any other forum.

Martin, where is this place that still practises the black art of white metalling? Graham

http://www.formhalls.com/index.htm

I can personally recommend Terry Formhalls, he's an expert and has rebuilt engines for me. He's not cheap but he's very good.

I believe there is also a place in Birmingham who do white metalling, but haven't got the full details.

Martin

Its a Sunbeam "Lion" 500 or 600cc of the early 30's. The transfer incorporates the lion logo.

I think there is a conversion kit available for the '50s twins. Have you tried Tri Supply in Devon as a source ?  If you don't find them, I know a very good source for white metalling.

British Bikes / Re: Triumph Bronze Head

Hi All,
I just discovered this forum and topic and thought I'd reply. I owned a 1939 tiger 100 with the bronze head for many years. I bought it for 325 quid in the late seventies when I was an art student and sold it around the end of the nineties if memory serves. This may not be correct, but when I did the first rebuild and went to buy new valves, guides and springs I was told that the exhaust valves were of the larger, post-war type and guess this could be the difference between the bronze and iron heads. The bike had been raced after the war at Brands Hatch and came with what I was told was a McCandless swinging arm conversion, twin carbs and a finned rear brake hub and drilled sprocket from its racing days. Also 9.5-1 pistons which made it fly until in my ignorance I punched a hole in one using too low grade petrol. I kept it running in many guises with little or no money, but it was incredibly reliable, my only transport, taking me through many winters, snow and all, and even a tour round France. I sold it when I left the country for some years to guy who said he wanted to race it, but I never kept up with him and haven't been to the vintage races for many, many years. Not a huge amount to add to the sum of knowledge on bronze heads, but a rather pleasant nostalgia trip for me. Cheers

Hello Alianco, the bronze head I have has larger inlet valves and the exhaust valves are standard, haven't run it yet but will probably have to tinker to get it running right. I have a picture of a T100 with Mc Candless rear springing and a bronze head which was for sale a few years back, but don't know how to post pictures on here, any help appreciated ?

Regards,

Martin
