Blimey, how big's the tank on the XBR then if you want a smaller one off a CX?
I always thought that the big bloated tank on the CX added to it's reputation as being a fat ugly b*stard.. ;)

There were New Era's produced in the UK but that was up until the mid/late 1920s and they were larger four-strokes.
Can't think they were ever big enough to export bikes though.

That (unconnected) speedo drive sticks out like a sore thumb. Not original surely?

Probably the same everywhere. Us amateurs doing it for the love of getting greasy can spend a whole morning on the bike and have nothing worthwhile to show for it at the end, but if you're doing it as a way of earning a crust someone has to be billed for that time whether it's productive or not.
Quickest way to cure yourself of a bike addiction....get a job working on them and dealing with their tight-arse owners. :-X

I know nothing about these bikes, but would it likely that the engine was manufactured in 1942?
I reckon Villiers might have had other priorities around that time..

You're somewhat behind the times there.
Those little Nortons (Electra especially) are now recognised for the useful little bikes they really are, and Triumphs (which originally had bathtubs) go for a lot more if they're still fitted.
Clearly the old factories were far-sighted, in reality.. ;)

Rotate it the same way as it would if running.

Check that both the ball races are seated properly. Even a few thou off where it should be puts side-loading on the bearings.

Still a bit lost on this.
How can a motor mount bolt inserted from the wrong direction cause a tap tap when the clutch is pulled?

I reckon a lot of it comes down to someone's ability to make/adapt/fabricate the missing parts required.
Bantam (for instance) plungers are common enough, so providing the diameter of the units can be accommodated in the space available it shouldn't be difficult to adapt the central column to fit in the James lugs.
If you like resurrecting long-dead machinery it's all part of the fun. ;)

My first ever bike pile of parts. Got it in exchange for a Matchie gearbox left behind by my Ten Pound Pom brother, and later swapped it for a couple of a quid and an Alice Cooper LP.
A valuable lesson learnt...it's always better cheaper and easier to buy a complete bike than a load of of parts purporting to be most of a bike.

It only does it with the clutch engaged,

Are you implying it doesn't do it with the clutch pulled then?
That could narrow it down a lot.

Then I would say the gasket-trimming would be a good place to start. I've had the same problem with pattern gaskets from Ebay.
