Fair point. When he said the engine was "free" I assumed he meant the big end was all OK after the rebuild.

Lots of folk around with old french bikes they are regretting buying. They are brought back by antique dealers and speculators trying to cash in on  the present daft old bike prices. Generally they know eff all about bikes of any kind.
The french are off loading all their old tat because its now impossible to put one back on the road without original paperwork.

This paragraph should be embroidered onto those old sampler things and hung in every house of the "I really like the Art Deco look of old French bikes" dreamers.
Reality.

I have always had a yen for a Scott after hearing one yowling along the lanes in the Dales, probably 50 years ago. And I also have a very odd feeling I might like an Ariel Arrow. Strange as I've always hated 2 strokes.

Scotts are incredibly addictive and nothing like screaming RD's or ride-to-work pop-pops which are the usual typical two-stroke scenarios. Will you be selling the 'Beam?

I believe it's been featured in a mini series in RealClassic magazine.

You sure the clutch is set up correctly? Shouldn't be that hard to pull, but these things are all relative. Anyone you know got one to compare with?

Understood.
I don't have any long-term memories on any of my bikes, and I've always said that if anyone offered enough fivers they're each/all for sale. There's more bikes out there than I'll ever get to ride or own, and the "thrill" of a new one soon makes me forget the good rides with the old one!
Having said that there's still a mental league table of what would go first and what would be the last to go.

Like you, I find the value of my bike irrelevant.

It's not though, is it? At some point you (or your executor!) will sell it/them, and then the value becomes very real. Although "ten bob a ton" may be a witty reply, the reality is if they're going for six grand then six grand is what you'll expect.
That's not to say that gloating over the prices asked in the small ads isn't a particularly cheesy thing to do, but keeping a weather eye on trends is just sensible.

I think that's a good point for any buyer really.
When the ads say "only done ten miles since restoration" you've got to think that  it may be shiny but must be crap to ride, or that it's been slung together for resale purposes.
You can always repaint and rechrome a good runner (if that's your thing) at your leisure.

There's a bloke in the VMCC mag every month after Silent Superb parts. I guess he's struggling too.
Then there's the bloke called Roy from Kent who's been advertising for Triumph twin bikes and parts every month for years now in the glossies. I wonder why the editors haven't made him take out a trade ad and stop making out he's an individual?

I'd say so.
Last taxed 1983, so new enough to be on the DVLA computer, still extant in 1983 so past the "pile of worthless scrap" era, so as said, probably languishing in the proverbial "I'll restore that old BSA one day" dreamer's shed, never to see the light of day until he croaks.

Not really an entry-level classic though, is it?

Actually I've revised my previously bad opinion of Jubs and Navigators in the last few years.
I know a few people who've got them as second/third bikes in the collection and they swear by them. Uprate the brakes and electrics and they're good little bikes. Never going to set the world alight, but then at 15 stone nothing small is, if you'll forgive me for saying!
I actually wouldn't mind an Electra, but the prices are rising!
