Identify these bikes! / Re: Norton, but wich model?
« on: March 07, 2010, 01:53:28 PM »
L.A.B is right about the engine being pre 1931 as it has the magdyno in the front, but girders were fitted to the sidevalve Nortons only from 1931. Before 1931 they would have had the druid forks but it could have been updated later. Also, the oil tank looks like it could be from the earlier flat tanks nortons and not like those from the 1930's.

Hi,
The engine is probably from 1933 as per the engine number.

Hi,
There is one on the British Only Austria website if you are willing to buy from a bit far away. It might be worth it considering you don't seem to find these for sale very often. Below is a link for the bike.

Identify these bikes! / Re: can anybody identify this norton please
« on: February 26, 2010, 02:35:29 AM »
That is a Norton ES2 500cc OHV from 1947 to 1952. The exact year can be identified using the engine and frame numbers which should be matching from factory. The bike seems mostly original except for both mudguards, the seat and probably the rear number plate.

Identify these bikes! / Re: Levis Which model and year?
« on: February 25, 2010, 10:28:44 PM »
Thanks again 33d6.
The forks did look like they were from a Triumph model H to me at first. Though they don't appear to be exactly like them though. The forks actually like early girders that have instead been fitted with the fore and aft spring. Now I think the bike is definitely a bitsa. The bike is in India and the mechanics there are known to make radical modifications to keep a bike running and I guess this could be an example of such a case. The bike belongs to my friend who purchased it believing it to be a Levis. He did not have any history regarding the bike and so asked me to find info regarding the model and year. Despite being a bitsa the bike still looks interesting as it is not easy to identify it as a bitsa at first glance (At least for me as I did not realize that the magneto and carb were later ones even though I did see the bike in person).

Thanks for the replies.
I have been searching the internet for pictures of Levis and don't seem to find anything like this. So I am starting to think that this might either be a bike built up from components of other bikes or it might be some other marque. The front forks seem a bit strange to me, as its not like the usual druids type that you would expect on an old bike. Also, the magneto on the bike doesn't look like one I'd expect on a bike from the 1920's. Any ideas if the magneto seems right for such a bike?

Identify these bikes! / Levis Which model and year?
« on: February 20, 2010, 02:49:12 PM »
Hi Everybody,
I am trying to help a friend identify the model and year for a Levis motorcycle that my friend recently acquired. The bike has belt drive to the rear wheel so I think it is probably an early 1920's or earlier model. I have posted some pictures of the bike at the following link. http://picasaweb.google.com/cooltehrani/FarhanSFiles?feat=directlink
Any information regarding the model or year this could be from will be appreciated, as my friend plans to restore the bike after positively identifying the model and year.

Thanks

Autojumble / Wanted Norton Model 7 fenders
« on: July 20, 2008, 01:30:07 AM »
I am looking for the front and rear fenders for my plunger frame 1952 Norton Model 7. I live in the U.S so it would be preferable to find them around here. Any information as to where I can find original or reproduction fenders would be appreciated.
Thanks

33d6, Once again thanks for all the information. I love finding more information and history about these old bikes.
I would love to see a picture of your Excelsior Model 4 for comparison.

33d6, Thanks for the wealth of information.
So just to confirm, my bike has a 196cc super sports tt villiers engine and is a Model 4 as per the Excelsior range. Did excelsior offer the bike with both the super sports and super sports tt engine? ( If i understand correct, the difference is that the super sports tt has a detachable head while the super sports engine doesn't.)

Thank you Justin and 33d6 for your quick replies.
Well, I thought it was an Super Sports TT engine as thats what it says on the barrel. I've attached a pic where you can make it out. I did check the engine prefix on http://www.villiers.info/ and was confused at the fact that my bike has a KZ prefix instead of the BZ but the barrel says otherwise. I considered that the bike may have had parts replaced or mixed with other bikes, but since the bike is located in India, I'm not sure if many of these were sent to India to allow parts to be exchanged. I can't check the frame number again as the bike is in India and I currently in the US and was considering bringing it to the US. It is possible that the frame number my dad gave me is a part number rather than the actual frame number.

I am very curious about the girder fork on the bike as it looks like its steel pressed like on German bikes rather than the tubular ones on other British bikes. I googled early Excelsior bikes and most of them seemed to have the tubular type forks. Also could you suggest any websites for more information regarding Excelsiors of this period? What other differences would there be between a super sports tt and a 196 super sports engine. Is one more collectible/desirable than the other? Are these relatively common or would they be considered rare?I don't have any idea about these bikes as I'm more into pre 1955 Nortons and Triumphs, but I find this bike very interesting.

Thanks again

Hi everybody,
My dad owns a motorcycle with a Villiers Super Sports TT engine. We think it is an Excelsior but haven't been able to find another example on the internet to compare how original it is. The engine number is KZ1791 and the frame number is W1056. After doing a bit of research on the internet about the Villiers Super sports TT engine I believe it to be 172cc made between 1926 and 1932, but I have no idea about the model of the bike. So any more info about the bike would be appreciated.
Thanks

British Bikes / AJS 1922
« on: June 22, 2009, 04:59:24 PM »
Hi everybody,
My dad has recently bought the AJS pictured below and I'm trying to help him get some more information regarding the bike. The bike seems to be in very orignal condition apart from the safety rim in the front and new leather bags. We've been told its a 350cc model B 1922. Would this have been the sporting version or touring version as according to an online source 3 variations of the 350cc were made (B,B1 and B2 models) in 1922. And I was also wondering if this is a relatively common model or year? Any other info would also be appreciated.
Also even though the bike is currently in the USA, there are traces of a british number XK 936 in the rear number plate. I believe the original front number plate was sold along with the number before coming to the US. Hopefully this should help in getting some history behind the bike.
Thanks

British Bikes / Re: What Norton Model Is This?
« on: June 03, 2009, 01:57:07 PM »
The bike appears to be a Norton ES2. The frame should be from between 1947 and 1952 as it has the rear plunger suspension. The engine and frame numbers would be needed to find the exact year.

I'm not an expert but the gearbox appears to be from a Triumph. And the bike seems to be modified quite a bit from its stock factory appearance.

No idea about pricing, but prices vary from country to country and knowing the location of the bike would help others give an estimate.
