British Bikes / DUFF DYNAMO
« on: October 04, 2008, 04:47:06 PM »
I have 2 "Goldies" with mag/dyno's, and strangly for some reason both dynamo's have ceased to chuck out power.
Both bikes have been laid up for a couple of years, and i have cleaned the part that the brushes run on.
I have even tried regenerising the dynamo, by touching the battery live (positive earth) a couple of times on the fields terminal on the end of the dynamo, and yet still no life.
Any ideas?

British Bikes / BEST LOCTITE
« on: August 19, 2008, 10:34:31 PM »
I am in a bit of a pickle.

I am about to assemble the bottom end of my BSA DB32 engine, but i am wondering which loctite to use to trtain the ctankshaft roller bearings outer race in the crankcases, as there is very slight wear and also to stop the smaller ball bearing outer sleeve from turning in the crankcase which it has been doing. Ther is about a 1thou gap.

I am tempted to use the loctite 648 high temp, or do i go for the 271 stud and bearing fit?
I also have loctite sleeve and bush retainer (green in colour)?

Which is the best and strongest to give me piece of mind?

The 648 seems the strongest being reccommended for gearbox shafts etc, but is it any good for retaining bearings, even though it may be difficult to remove bearings in the future without excessive heat.

The 2 big roller bearings fit quite well into the crankcases but when fitting i will heat the cases up to ease fitment Will this effect the loctite because i want to put a drop on just in case of any movement.

British Bikes / CRANKSHAFT BALANCE
« on: August 19, 2008, 09:22:55 PM »
I have just had my BSA Gold Star DB32 350 bored out to 400cc by a Gold Star specialist using a Wiesse forged piston.
Would this upset the balance of the crankshaft causing possible vibration, or would it be unnoticeable when i rebuild the engine?

British Bikes / WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE???
« on: August 04, 2008, 12:50:03 AM »
Whats the difference between a genuine BSA CB, DB and DBD Gold Star frame and a genuine Rocket Gold Star frame?

Does the RGS have the kink in the bottom down tube to accomadate the oil pump on the single? Are there any other differences?

I do know the difference between a B31/B33 frame and a Gold Star swinging arm frame is that the B31/B33 are identical apart from 2 lugs welded on the rear frame bottom loops to mount the rear set foot rests on the clubman models, and that the frame number is stamped on the top of the down tube by the headstock instead of dead centre at the front of the headstock. A Gold Star frame number starts with CB32.
I myself have a DBD34 engine in a modified (2 lugs) B31 frame.
The bike is in prestine condition in every detail, and i was not prepared to pay an extra £4-5000 for 2 lugs and a CB32 frame number.

British Bikes / BSA to NORTON CONVERSION
« on: July 14, 2008, 06:05:51 AM »
I have just purchased a 350 Gold Star with RRT2 gearbox and is fitted with a Norton clutch.

Can anyone tell me if the splined end of a Norton Domminator gearbox mainshaft is the same size as a BSA gearbox mainshaft.

I have reason to believe that a standard Norton clutch has been fitted directly on to the BSA shaft, hence the slight movement of the clutch spider(centre) on the shaft which is causing slight runout and vibration.

If the BSA shaft is slightly smaller, is there a manufacturer who makes a BSA to Norton spider conversion so i can get a nice snug fit?
