British Bikes / Re: bsa pre unit single cams
« on: November 13, 2015, 10:16:31 PM »
Hi Mark2
What carb is fitted?
If theres a high comp piston fitted then the magneto needs to be at its absolute best
It may be possible to add a compression plate ? or lower comp piston to aid easier starting

Hi Mark2
Ah you only told half the story???
Fit  two 2446 as used in the scramblers, it gives a much more tractable engine than the roadrace setup
This is what I have selected  for my engine build, as I like lots of midrange power,
I'm getting too old for head down and arse up  ::) ::)

Hi,
Quote
going by the lift looks like the left hand pair are both 2450
So two exhaust cams

I dont know how the cams could be id'd by the lift ?

It may be possible to run with the  2450 as an inlet cam if you have to, but I would set the timing with a degree disc for best results
40 teeth on the cam pinion so one tooth = 9 degrees
A stepped mainshaft pinion key can be made to make finer adjustments
Check the cam duration, and calculate lobe centre of the original and new cams
Set the new cam with the same lobe centre position to start off with and then check the overall timing

Hi Mark2,
Are there numbers or letters on the cams? from those their application can be identified
If you go to fit performance cams (goldie) to iron engined B31/33's you need to check that the underside of the valve cap/collets does not foul the top of the guides also that the followers do not foul the shoulder on the pivot pin or crankcase
There are other combinations that work as well there was also a 10 degree advance pinion available, recommended for the 350 engine

British Bikes / Re: 1966 BSA A65 Lightning Spark Plugs
« on: November 06, 2015, 09:39:34 PM »
Hi
Use the camera to have a look into the ports,  look for oil coming into the ports down the guides
Have you checked the valve clearances since the decoke?
Compression is low??? are you opening the throttles fully when testing?
Swop over the plug leads from the twin coil and see if the problem moves to the other side
I would also check the fuel heights on the carbs, high fuel level on the problem side may make it run rich
Its well worthwhile to hook up vacuum gauges or a "twinmax"  to synch the carbs
Remove the balance tube and attach gauges there

British Bikes / Re: 1966 BSA A65 Lightning Spark Plugs
« on: November 05, 2015, 05:47:04 PM »
Hi,
There's probably a reason(s) why the plugs have failed  ::) failed plug is a symptom not a cause (usually)  ???
Are the failed plugs black and sooty or oily? or burnt and grey looking?
What ignition system has the bike fitted? original points and coils or electronic?
Are the carburetteurs in good condition and synchronised properly?
Is the engine in good mechanical condition and is compression more or less equal on both cylinders?

Where are you based? Try and find a well recommended classic repair shop or fellow A65 owner in your area

British Bikes / Re: Lycett Aero saddle elastics?
« on: October 15, 2015, 08:29:17 PM »
Hi Leon,
The elastic is available from sailing chandlers, known as "shock cord"
I'm reasonably sure my Brother got the fittings from this ebay seller, ann60.7771
Is this saddle for the Rudge?
Did you get the PM I sent regarding the thick Rudge clutch plain plate?

British Bikes / Re: oil tank cleaning
« on: September 09, 2015, 11:41:18 PM »
Hi,
Owning and having rebuild quite a few pre unit BSA's their oil tanks are awkward to say the least to clean out
The way the two halves are welded together makes a narror V shape inside the tank
This provides a home for any nasty gritty bits  that are difficult to remove  >:(
A sharpened stainless steel tig welding rod, 2.4 or 3.2mm can be shaped to scrape out the V most but not all the way round the joint
A strong magnet placed in the bottom of the tank will attract any loose steel particles
I have fitted a non magnetic boss to the tank bottom of my own A10, this is tapped to fit a stainless drain plug drilled on the inner end and a magnet glued in,
This has made draining a lot less messy than removing the mesh filter plug on the tanks side

Hi Phil,
What thickness have you requested the new plates  to be made ?
Leon has the 1/8th nominal plate which sounds like the way to go if getting them made?

Hi All,
mark2, thanks for posting the photos, I have not seen such a conversion piece before

Like Phil, I believe the source of my troubles are distorted plain plates?? I have relined the chainwheel and friction plate and made sure they are flat
I fitted a later adjustable spring thimble assembly to get the lift even
All burrs and wear ridges removed,
It still slips and drage at the same time :(

I have seen some Rudge race bikes that look to have "speedway" style or similar "modern" clutches
Again the problem would be to get it to fit inside the original primary cover

Hi smartfella,
Your NH appears to have an Albion gearbox fitted as opposed to the Burmans in the catalog
pics ??
(just to add to your woes ???)

Have you the JAP engine? is it the "dog ear " type as in the catalog?
