Yes, a model called "Special"
Originally there was a "Standard" , "Special" and "Ulster" (after 1928)
Soon the "Special" was the base model,
I may be interested in your gearbox depending on condition and price???

Hi Wetdog,
it looks like the 2 fittings on the underside are for the flow and return
A "special" tank it is, As far as I know the Ulster has a cutaway to access the centeral sparkplug
Next Question!!! are the fillercaps screw on or bayonet ?
Bayonet is 1930 I think
The gearbox can be dated from the serial number
The 1931 (Special) models introduced in Sept 1930 changed a lot, mag chain driven behind the cylinder and separate oil tanks, I have one produced late 1930

does it have provision for circulating oil? 2 connections?

Have you fitted the pushrods the correct way round? (dont ask how I know :-[)
1965 will have points on the side I think? so this rules out distributer probs
Have you set the valve clearances according to the book?

Hi Rob,
A decent engine reconditioners shop will have books containing hundreds of valve sizes
There will be some in there that will be a good basis for modification
I have modified Perkins diesel valves to fit several BSA and AJS models, 3/8 stem and 45mm dia head
Also ""Bantam John"" has blank valves in various sizes, around £20 a pop, these have long stems which are handy for SV engines
I have just had a pair of these slotted (spark eroded for £20) These are going into a side valve Blackburne!!
An alternative is to turn collet grooves and fit caps and collets from a more modern BSA/Triumph etc.

I picked up a couple of "gold star " valves at Stafford at the weekend, these are going to be modified to fit the BSA L25 ohv engine, these engines have really big valves for a 350  :o
I will be using BSA A65 caps and collets
My 350ohv  Blackburne engine has BSA A65 valves fitted 8) I made new guides to suit the smaller stems

Big tank, twin float chambers, iron engine = Alcohol based fuel
Straight pipe where allowed and then the can added for the likes of Brooklands

Hi Jim,
Do you have photos of the set up?
It seems somewhat unlikely that the po would go to all that work just to filter the bypass oil?????
I have seen Triumphs converted to full flow where the oil is fed in to the crank at the prv fitting which lines up with the crank end????

Hi Rob,
No gasket is used , use hylomar or whatever your favourite sealer is
Get a woodruff key from your local engineerisn supplies shop or agri/lawnmower shop
The keys are NOT hardened

HI All,
Hmmmmm, I think I'll go for the £20 one  ;D
The man is delusional in thinking one is worth €900   :o
This type of engine has a fore and aft camshaft driven by a skew gear, and the valves are at an inclined angle towards the cylinder????
Not a great design in my opinion :(
To the best of my knowledge this design appeared around 1928, ????
I wonder why Blackburne moved away from  the traditionally designed sidevalver for the utility market??
I know that the produced some unique engine designs in very small quantities for various manufacturers
This must have been hugely cost ineffective!!!!!!!!!

To the best of my knowledge, and experience the Norton box is derived from the original Sturmey Archer
4 speeder, later the Dolls head , upright/laydown and finally the version which was fitted on Nortons AMC's etc from the late 50's through to the Commando
The late Norton gears will fit a 30's box, which is very good news for restorers ( maybe not all the ratios identical, but it will work)

AJS?Matchless models used Burman gearboxes up till they took over Norton (maybe later??)

I felt this correction needed to be made

Classic Motorcycle magazine April 1992 has a good article on Chrono speedos
There was another magaxzine article recently, Ian Bartram gave a good description of the workings
Your balance wheel can be correctad bty adding clip on weights which were used to calibtate the speedos

Theres a similar engine on Ebay at the moment, number 190659892991,
Looks as if not much interest in it :(
Have you contacted Rick Parkington via Classic Bike magazine?
Rick has been collecting and collating Blackburne info, so as to get a history / dating database together
