British Bikes / Re: BSA Bantam misfire and sparking pionts.
« on: January 17, 2016, 09:11:53 AM »
Hmmm, new condensor and points still spark.

All I can think of, is is the condensor actually in the circuit.
It hasn't accidentally been isolated or insulated somehow ?

Tried a new spark plug in it ?
Old or fouled plug may need easy-to-burn easystart to be able to spark...

Tried tipping a spoonful of 2 stroke mix down the plughole, rather than easystart.
Could be your main jet is plugged or blocked off too, if it has been standing for a while and the old fuel has evaporated.

it was surface mail, and took weeks to get there,

Weeks ?
I bought something from Canada, and the postal blurb mentioned it could take up to 90 days for delivery.
90 days was approaching, and I was about ready to call out the Mounties.
Right on cue, it arrived on about the 90th day. I'm sure they'd had it sitting there waiting ... ?
Or maybe it came via the trans polar route, and they'd met some ice ?

Alas, surface mail is no more, for many destinations.
Its all expensive airmail - or no other choice.

That probably puts you one up on the rest of us !

And without the trimmings.

On 2nd thoughts, that front engine mount may be lower rather than higher out front. ??

Identify these bikes! / Re: What make is this

Looks like some variety of Peugeot.
Something like this early 1950s one, but the toolbox may make it different

A 2 stroke twin, and not the view you'd usually see of it !
Likely candidates that come to mind are a Villiers 2T twin, the Excelsior Talisman twin, or an Ariel Arrow.

Views of the gearbox end of it and the timing side could assist.
The Villiers was the only one (?) that was semi unit (bolt up gearbox), so I'd opt for that one.
Not being real familiar with any of them...

If you can get the same orientation, this would be similar (?)

Obviously, you only have the inner crankcase bits...

We are still going to have to have that discussion about the Ronald Peck Special. (pic shown on P1 of this discussion).
Clearly this is the same engine and bike, with the front forks changed...

Value - will depend on the history - how did your dad get involved ?
Being a race bike, the thoroughness of the resto also will have some bearing.
Its always been said that a race bike is only as good as its last rebuild/rebuilder...

If the history of the bike checks out in all respects, its value could be considerable, to the right collector.
250cc is not quite as sought after as the bigger bangers, but you never know.

Some of the specialist magazines could be quite interested in a story on the bike and its resto.
Hope someone kept some good pics !

Still think you should enquire if the local library was interested, possibly back to their main library.
Or someone local from the VMCC.

Someone came to club night with a big stack of magazines, everyone went home with a handfull.
Although they weren't in French...

Its probably a fairly limited market here. (?).
At least put them in one of the free ads bike magazines, or even on ebay.

I'd like to have them, or at least browse through them, but postage would be a killer...

You might also investigate if a Library would be interested.
Quite a lot of early brit motorcycle magazines are becoming online, after someone donated them sets,
and they have something to scan. That will be a godsend for later researchers/enthusiasts. !

And this is you asking on Sheldons ?

Keep digging, someone will know who the folks behind this were.
That pic has a phone number, maybe its still active ?

Autojumble / Re: identify the model of bsa flat tanker
« on: December 06, 2015, 04:38:32 AM »
Just to confound the issue too, in the 1920s BSA's little Model B was a 250cc 'Round Tank',
so thats not sounding very much of a match.

The Model A, which may be related to that engine number (?) was a little 2 stroke,
the predecessor (sort of) to the later bantam.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b4/BSA_Model_A28_175cc_two_stroke_1928.jpg

Are we getting warmer ?
Even a description of the type of engine, gearbox, wheels, brakes, gearbox, colours etc will assist to narrow it down.

Be a brave/foolhardy person that would attempt this,
given the vast range of things that BSA put over over the decades.

But B33 sounds like it might be something to do with a postwar 500cc single, in the frame dept at least. (?).
Quite how that sits with a flat tanker is anyones guess.

Its times like these a pic is worth a zillion words.....

British Bikes / Re: Whats this Norton ?

Scrap the Norton ? !!

Those rear suspension conversions are becoming prized among enthusiasts,
as examples of working improvements to the breed.
Not many have survived either...

Don't the car people have a rule something like that 5 out of the 7 major components have to be original.
Not sure WHICH car people this applies to, but it keeps the hot-rodders out of the veteran and antique clubs/runs.
(and in their own runs)
