British Bikes / Re: 1963 A50 headlamp nacelle
« on: August 15, 2005, 08:13:17 PM »
I think you may be right that an A7/A10 front end has been fitted, as closer inspection of your photo seems to show that the bucket (cowl) is an A7/10 item, the clues are the horizontal chrome(?) flash, and the switches fitted on the right hand side instead of left, the rear switch hole has probably been cut as the A7/10 seems to have only one switch there?.
Do you have any more detailed photos of the assembly?

From what I can see in the photo you sent before, the top yoke cover MAY be the wrong type?
The parts book shows a deeper shaped part that covers the handlebar clamps, fork top nuts and steering stem adjusting sleeve etc. rather than what is shown in the photo BUT there may be slight differences between US and UK or general export models?
That cover looks more like an A7-A10 or a single cylinder model item?
The upper ends of the fork legs locate to the top yoke by tapered joints so it shouldn't be possible to move their positions up or down without changing the top yoke as well?

I think Nigel has a 1963 model so may be able to add to this?

I haven't used these tyres myself but they would seem to be an excellent choice.

I haven't been able to find an Avon Speedmaster 3.25 x 18" advertised elsewhere, so maybe it is no longer available?

Todd,
No hard and fast rules in the UK regarding which brand of tyres to use as the choice of suitable classic tyres has become somewhat limited these days, the Dunlop TT100 and Avon Roadrunner/Speedmaster/Safety Mileage would be the most common choice I suppose?

Britcycle list a Speedmaster 3.25 x 18" so I am guessing that they are still available?

Any good quality 20W/50 engine oil should be adequate but opinions vary, some preferring to use the cheapest brands and doing more frequent oil changes while others tend to go for the higher quality oil, although the use of synthetic oil isn't really necessary.
20W/50 viscosity oil is not as common as it used to be so you may have to hunt around until you find a supplier or possibly get it by mail order from somewhere like Holdens or any good motorcycle shop should be able to order it from their supplier.

I tend to use Shell Optimax myself in my older motorcycles as it supposedly has a higher octane rating but other classic riders have used normal unleaded without problems.
There are also differences of opinion concerning fuel additives as some riders haven't used them yet have not suffered valve seat problems. I do normally use Castrol Valvemaster Plus myself but I may be wasting my money?

I don't know where you live but leaded petrol is still available at certain places around the country.

It is the date that the bike was CONSTRUCTED that determines if the bike qualifies for a free tax disc (if constructed before 1st January 1973), not the date of registration, so your bike will qualify. You may need to send a dating letter to the DVLA from someone like the Triumph Owners Club, but I am not too sure of the technicalities?
Perhaps it would be a good idea to ask the DVLA?

Maybe others here may know more?

I think most MOT stations would (should) fail a bike with play in the wheel bearings, they should be easy to replace so I cannot see any reason (personally) not to?

Todd,
I don't think that 6500 miles use would be enough to have filled the sludge trap, although personally I think I would be inclined to strip the engine/gearbox as it has been standing for so long,  then at least you would know that everything is as it should be.
If you find little or nothing wrong with it then that is a bonus!
But the final decision is really up to you!
