British Bikes / Re: to restore or not
« on: November 18, 2013, 07:58:48 PM »
I like to see original 'original' bikes... mechanically sorted, but in their factory gate livery, UNLESS it looks a real dog... then a little sympathetic restoration does not come amiss. Sadly a bike that looks as if it came off the production line ten minutes ago is nice but lacks the character of the old war horse.

Like you, I have never seen or heard of these before. I'm fascinated to find out what and why :)

I reckon bids might reach £25K and not reach reserve although if I was selling it I think I would have gone to a prestige auction house and stood their prohibitive charges... just because they reach the required clientele.

So who's going to run the book?

I recently took a frame to the powder coaters (my friend) and he is very good at what he does, but forgot to take the swinging arm. A few day later I took the swinging arm and some other stuff to another friend who has a paint shop. Both items came back in perfect order but I must say the paint finish is far superior! Just something else to think about.

I must admit I like time spent in the workshop probably more than riding although I do about 10000 miles a year on bikes. I'm not a trained engineer but I love the problems old bikes throw at you and the learning curve of making them good again.

Simple ,get yourself a panhead Hydra Glide. No rigid fifties pommy bike will cruise at those speeds, without destroying itself.I include square fours in this.Only a Harley 74 can do this reliably, and knuckleheads are in the BS class pricewise now,so you need a panhead. They can still be bought for reasonable prices.Regards John.

Brough's would easily and so would Vincents... a Harley would do fine especially if you had a keen interest in tractors...
