British Bikes / Re: Ariel VG 1950
« on: August 20, 2023, 09:21:37 AM »
There is a 28mm Micarb to suit a 500 RE .........the Ariel was supposedly rebuilt with Red Hunter internals..........the only difference in 1950 was the flywheels- steel vs cast iron   the carby 276 vs 289,and a valanced front mudguard ......it came with a melted carb and magneto .......Ive put a brass all parts carb on it ,and it seems to run quite well ,the few turns Ive had it out on  the back street.

I see a dealer with a real bitser (and incomplete ) Ariel 500 single  for $17,000........ a quite similar bike  couldnt make $3000 on ebay just this week ........needless to say ,the reserve was much more.

Next is my Ariel VG ........Im sure its in a alot better condition mechanically than the Norton,as it was burned up in a carb fire many years ago .....anyhoo,its going again but has had very little use ..........at the moment its got a brass allparts carby (wont melt next time there is a fire),which is only 1" bore ..........question is ,do I bore out a 276 to 1 & 1/16 (correct size) or find a 289.........I ve had a look around for a 289 ,but seems they are rare and valuable ...even when knackered .........in fact every Amal ive seen is knackered ,but that has no effect on the asking price............something to do with a new one costing $1000 by the time it arrives in the antipodes...........Makes the Indian Mikuni off a RE at $90 delivered very attractive.............but that would be heresy ,of course.

The NOS  shaft has arrived ,not as bad as the seller indicated .....no corrosion that I can see ,but it does have some sort of black coating ......may be phosphating ,or maybe just fine dry rust .......anyhoo,its quite acceptable for the money .....but it is the doll head mainshaft ,so some alteration of the primary will be necessary..........next is the spider ......I should have bought one when they were 37 quid .....now the price is 237 quid for new made later model spider.....which may be able to be altered to fit,say the sellers..............On the bright side tho,I see a Norton ES2 same as mine for sale on F Book for $20,000 .......he wont get it ,but the thought is there.

JAPs traditionally breathe only through the oilbox ......if you put breathers anywhere else ,you upset the lubrication system, and may even cut off the big end feed

British Bikes / cost of bike parts
« on: August 15, 2023, 10:47:45 AM »
Since I decided to go through a couple of bikes and fix the basics ....Ive been amazed/shocked by the prices of spares .........and the scarcity of spares in general for 70 year old British  bikes ............if it was Harley or Indian bits needed ,then there are plenty of suppliers at reasonable prices (post from the US is a killer ,though),but UK stuff seems to have run out .........a couple of things I bought ,were listed as 'last one' ............and ,would you believe an Amal carby slide at nearly $100 ?.........I think the last one I bought was sixpence.

OK,have bit the bullet ,and ordered a WW 2 shaft .........noticed that RGM have in tiny print that they have no stock of anything but Commando shafts ........I certainly have the technology ,probably could make one ......but why bother .

back in the day ,I got most of the parts as NOS...........all the gears are the same as the doll head box ,as is the layshaft ...........I was also a member of the Norton Owners Club then .....the spares they sent me were a complete waste of jet fuel ........anyhoo,the problem is worn splines on the clutch end of the shaft .....the spider is also worn ,and the combined slack is causing considerable vibration ............time to fix it .

Thanks for the information........unfortunately it confirms my recall from years ago.......the commonly available WW2 surplus shaft is too long .(doll head box).  8.9" vs 8.625"......I may look into altering the primary driveline ..........the engine sprocket is a replica one too ,and the taper isnt correct .........I reckon I could make better parts than what the parts places sell.

I need to replace the mainshaft in the G 101 laydown box in my 1950 ES2 .......Ive sort of put this off for more than 20 years ,and at that point in time ,I couldnt identify the correct shaft without dismantling the box .........Anyone help with this ......I was in the NOC at that time ...........What I need is a length ...RGM offer a "pre AMC" shaft ......but there were a lot of pre AMC gearboxes ,not just the laydown..............I sort of know the answer .....pull the box to pieces ......but I dont want to be another silly old geezer with a dozen bikes in pieces......John-Whiting.

Ive sort of wanted a copy of "The JAP Engine " by Fenner for years ,but never going to pay a silly price .........then I just happened to see an as new copy with the red dust cover intact for $10 at a flea market .........anyhoo,this book includes a section by Wal Phillips on the speedway engines .........and thats where the photo of the timing gear comes from .

It has NSW rego papers from 2005.........IMHO ,the restamped number would be because the Transport or Cops  has objected to the partially obliterated number ,and required a new number ......seems strange the new number is 2-4-6-8 ?......typical of what the old geezer who used to stamp new engines would do .........at least they didnt use the 1" high numbers that were used on truck blocks.
