Unfortunately,no other mag will "fit" a BSA ,due to the unique base location setup.... the Ariel mag has the standard" Bosch " four bolt mounting......There used to be lots of WW2 surplus NOS BSA M20 mags around, cant imagine they ve all been used up.

Supressed ignition componenets?.....a mag should have a copper wire cored spark lead, the plug and/or plug cap must not be supressed,or the mag windings will break down from overvoltage..................I would also point out the well known fact that its virtually impossible to accurately locate TDC,with stick in plughole, and hard enough with a dial gauge .......therefore ,the full advance point is used as a reference.

mention of jamming a screwdriver between gear teeth to tighten/loosen the nut, then mention of "flexing" of the magneto shaft............hopefully .being aware that the mag shaft is a stub  press fitted into a brass armature end,and quite easy to bend /make loose in the brass piece.......the catch being the brass piece is a matched assy with the rest of the armature, and wont be amenable to individual parts swapping........moral of the story being you cant fix cuckoo clocks with a pipe wrench, not very well anyway.

Gear train to mag.....if it has "jumped" one tooth ,then the gears will be a mess.......must say Ive been inundated with silly timing claims by  newbies who dont know how to remove backlash  before checking the timing........One even asking about his car,I could clearly hear the clatter of valves hitting pistons ,cambelt timing one tooth out.......he says he cant do it any better......must be the engines fault.............Good story tho....millenial says "can you have a look at my car?".......No ,I  dont know nothin about cars....."What kind of mechanic are you ,doesnt know about cars"......".A bl**dy smart one." sez I.

Sounds like you got a blockage in the fuel somewhere.....is there a fine gauze strainer  in the threaded connection to the tank.......might be blocked........anyway ,check the fuel flow to the carby ,with the cap on the tank(sometimes cap breathers cause problems).....also possible the capacitor in the mag has given up ....or even the windings ....but replace the capacitor first.

However ,there is great similarity in the kickstart mechanism, and some of the bits ,like the sprag, pin, bushes maybe, and the external spring......worth comparing,if you need kickstart parts.

There is not one piece in a LS box similar to a AMC box........however ,if you go forward about 5 years, the Four speed Sturmey Archer box is the forerunner of the AMC box,and there is some interchangeability .....and the Norton dollhead box made by Burmans has about 80% of interchangeable parts..........In the various owners clubs ,parts runs of LS parts have been made,at considerable cost.

British Bikes / Re: T 100 oil feed return problem
« on: September 29, 2019, 12:30:00 PM »
The oil level in the tank will quickly fall if the return isnt equal to the feed, and the engine will begin to smoke profusely, and even stop with fouled plugs....if the oil level is fairly constant with the motor running, then the oil is returning.

The rider is said to be A Alexander ,as IIRC mentioned in the Douglas book........I have always been amazed the ohv motor even ran, considering the lack of cooling fins on the exhaust ,especially the rear cylinder.....must have run on alcohol, much alcohol.......I also seem to remember the plates being the source of much pontification in years gone by,without any conclusion, ever since the book came out.

reminds me of John Longmans 1914 Triumph, concours winner in the early 70s,sold on ebay a few years ago as a sad rusted wreck after years of neglect .

i notice I said back in 2014 that anyone with a lathe could cut an accurate taper........this is obviously wrong, and it seems impossible to get a replacement Norton engine sprocket ,or a mag sprocket where the taper is even close.

Old 2 strokes do four and 8 stroke.........its the Japs that sorted them out and got them running smoothly and evenly.

If you look ,there is a little lever on the timing case ,this I think was a half compression device, and was not fitted on the 1935 year Matchless, they using a conventional valve lifter......33d6 will correct this......a distinctive feature.........and OEC went bust in 1934 ,and were bailed out by Glanfield Lawrence, which was the start of the Matchless connection.

notice the engine in the pic has space under the intake pipe for a Magdyno.........most of the industrials dont, but have the upright timing case of the overhead motors......JAPs typically.........the other factor with the industrials is the drive side shaft is close in ,and needs a 3 speed box, otherwise the motor must be offset to the left....most bikes went over to two driveside bearings to suit 4 speed boxes around 1934/5.

Yes the last pic is likely a girder fork OEC...........now on the subject of girder fork OECs,there used to be picture of one with a Suzuki engine in it.....and it clearly showed the detail of the upper frame tubes ,under the tank......Now the reason I ask ,is I have a 34 OEC duplex, and Ive a hankerin to remove the duplex front and add a girder fork frame........incidentally,OEC allowed for this ,the frame is joined at the midsection ,top and bottom, and the rear part usable on either ...........and I might add,OEC duplexes are common in Oz ,so im not desecrating a rarity.
