True ,S Burman & sons made the boxes for Norton after 1934,not just the doll head, but the tombstone, and the laydown. All these boxes have many common parts ,and common with the 4 sp SA.......Burmans were rewarded by being double crossed by AMC,back when it was run by Charlie Collier.....even the AMC box was just a copy of the Norton box, with modifications to allow oilseals to be fitted.Nortons owned the design,Burman made the boxes, and AMC owned Norton.

Yes ,obvious the engine is a clone,as there is no monogram on the cover.......OK,Ransome ,Simms ,and Jefferies and Ransome and Rapier ,both of Ipswich, both said to have a family connection going back to the 1700s.........I always thought Ransome and Rapier made the little crawlers with the SA motor.......one thing tho,Id much rather have one of the crawlers than an old motorbike........mean to say,but I think Titch Allen would comment about inability to influence a pudding skin.

A smartfella might be sure the maggie is sparking OK before worrying about the valve timing......In any case,if the engine has compression turning over, the valve tiiming  is likely good enough to start it....the engine has but one camshaft ,so its likely right .

A 16 H engine will have 79x100 on it ,and a Norton number,no mention of 16H.......the pic shows a wide mounting boss, typical of an industrial motor.

You can get a set of oxy tip cleaners for a couple of bucks ......selection of wires from around 002  up to 040 ,or more.and designed for cleaning small orifices in brass and copper.

The little Ransome crawler tractors had a Sturmey engine..........the 350s were often fitted to Atco mowers......IMHO ,the SA was a much better engine than a JAP,and had a proper lubrication system, not something cobbled out of  1910 era bits.

Doesnt plug ,it screws in .....black bakelite acorn thingy with coarse threads.......the wires end in a flat contact washer, doesnt need to be soldered..........BSA maggies generally have dedicated base arrangements, but 1929 may be earlier ,and just use four screws........other thing is check your new mag has correct rotation(easily altered if necessary),correct advance direction, and the correct base mounting. The taper is standard across(nearly) all mags ,due to Robert Bosch.

V twin insanity ,more like........I suggested that a WLA Harley is ten times the motor any JAP is likely to be,shock horror......anyhoo ,Ive splurged on bits at bargain basement prices, and just have to wait to see it all arrive.

Thanks for the info, especially the rollers ...........my preference for the HD bits is price......as you all know ,there are any number of NOS piston kits for US$10 upward, other parts similar..........I havent measured the pin yet ,but from a cursory glance its not new ,just unworn......i have used the 003 os bearings before in JAP re builds.......quite cheap as opposed to some euro sources wanting 1 euro each ,up to one crowd wanted 3 euros each for 6.5 rollers.........I can get chinese ,but then its how many kilos do you want.............believe it or not, this guy paid $3000 for a motor from an autotruck ,in pieces.

JAP 750 MT......got another one to rebuild .........rods and pistons are missing ,which isnt a big loss,as the rods are crap.......Anyhoo,Im thinking of using WLA Harley bits all thru........anyone her done this?....The WLA bigend is about .10" wider ,which isnt a problem as I see it........the only difficulty is a crankpin.......there is a new pin with the bits, but JAP in their wisdom used a 25.2mm size for crankpins, not 1"......In fact all the shafts are hokey metric sizes......Ideas,anyone......and dont say Alpha..........I wont live long enough to get a custom made pin from them.

The other side of the AMC twin story.........Norton twin cranks are often standard ,and with little wear.....Matchless/AJS twins its rare to find a reusable crank............but I believe the reason was blocked filters neglected by careless owners............some blame the cast nodular iron cranks ,but these cast cranks work well in cars..

I recently salvaged an old brickies "jenny" wheel from a cleanup, and on pulling it down ,its been a NOS front Matchless wheel, not a chopped nut or thread anywhere........all the threads are 26tpi,and very closely fitted.......Unfortunately two large washers have been welded to the spindle ends ..........but bless those long ago brickies, the left the front brake in position ,so its still there, courtesy of the welds.

Even AMC themselves admitted the early twins had excessive oil pressure when cold......... F.W.Neill says it can force the crankcase halves apart at the filter............So I would say if you are happy the let the oil warm up ,a considerable reduction could be effected, say a relief set at 50 lbs ,or even 45.................Its funny to think that the two AMC bikes ,were near opposites ..........Norton twins had zero filters  ,or even gauzes, whereas Matchless/AJS twins had filters everywhere......that need to be serviced regularly.

I do recall carby spacers made of semihard black material back in the day when we all had hair and rode 650s like we didnt want to make it to 25......and Ive seen plenty of carbys with bent flanges ......I would doubt a carby spacer would be made of the genuine material......its very expensive ,and also notoriously hard to saw or machine.....I have a 4'x3' sheet of the stuff  that cost $1100 ,used to make the vanes for air compressors........its also used as a bearing running in water, like ship stern tubes, where strips of phenolic and soft rubber line the tube, also used as a bearing in rolling mills ,running in water for cooling.
