British Bikes / Re: Cush drive , necessary or not
« on: August 03, 2018, 01:48:52 AM »
A place where i worked used a Piaggio scooter to start a huge big Ruston and Hornsby 6cy diesel engine......the scooter was pivoted on the front, and the back wheel was lowered onto the big flywheel....it used to start up on a freezing cold night far quicker than the compressed air start supplied with the engine.....Scooters are powerful little things.

One warning....fitting a 12 V generator to a magdyno can quickly ruin the magneto.....what rubbish !  say the experts!........well no,the slipping gear assy on the mag will heat up and cook the mag......disable the slipping gear.

The revs at any speed in 4th are not related to the gear ratios, but to your final drive ratios.........in other words ,you can change the gearbox sprocket to suit your self............But a close ratio box can become a real problem if you expect to drive in traffic......In effect, you will have no first gear, and be starting in second gear ratio ....and slipping the clutch........If the motor is highly tuned with high CR and oversize carbies the bike will be a nightmare in traffic............

If the mount is forged steel, rather than cast ductile,it would be possible to weld the jap one onto a mounting similar to the original, and it would be very hard to pick then.

Save your money, simply lap the head to the barrel. Then a very thin smear of silastic to stop oil creeping out.....and you will never blow another gasket.....There wont be one....It also ups the compression a bit to improve performance.

I once knew a Frenchman who had happened onto a 1927 KSS Velo,free............He asked me the usual questions about how to restore it ,etc.........He returned about a month later with the bits.........he had the whole bike hot dip galvanized..........Chrome is so costly,he said.

there is a U tube video of a fellow delivering a wheelbarrow load of old bits to a restorer, and six months later driving off in a  Bentley..........so throwing money at a resto will definitely produce results.

Try increasing the exhaust valve clearance........open it to 10 thou if necessary...........if the mag has been off recently,as you say.....then I suspect the timing is out........but with a manual advance you should be able to get around a fair error in timing.A simple check is the motor should sound flat on full retard, then speed up as you advance the ignition, gradually. On full retard,if you blip the throttle, the motor should stumble, and maybe stall,on full advance, blip the throttle, and instant revs, without hesitation.

Seeing as its 10 hp ,you dont need to lose much.............assuming the ignition timing and carburation are right, you may be overgeared.............peak power will be at around 4000 rpm,and sidevalves loose power quickly at higher revs, work on that for your gearing.......55mph would be max in favorable conditions anyway.........another factor is engine heating, power reduces as the engine gets hotter, which it does running flat out.

You can check mainshaft endfloat roughly by pulling and pushing on the whole clutch assy....if you think its moving, then take out the pressure plate and plates ,and check endfloat on the clutch centre........which is rigidly attached to the mainshaft.....or should be.......Incidentally,the clutch pushrod adjuster often takes up shaft endfloat on bike boxes, shouldnt, but does............................I am still suspicious that your friction plates are expanding with the heat..................IMHO,autotrans fluid should be very suitable for a wet clutch, but its a very penetrating mix,and may be incompatible with your clutch lining material.........I do know ATF causes some synthetic materials to swell .

The design may have been OK,it was the crap quality of the pressed tin parts that was the problem......I replaced mine with the whole assy from an army beeza.....the tin cover is a must,or it will slip,Worked like a charm.....no more chipped and busted gears,no more bronze bushes jammed with steel chips scoring shafts away. The army bikes had all machined and hardened steel parts, the army wouldnt have put up with rubbish like the swingarm A10......the plunger A10s had a decent clutch of very similar type, all machined steel, which worked well.

keep your felt in a heavy duty sealed bag,or the moths will turn it to powder, cause the stuff aint cheap anymore.

If you have replaced the six spring clutch, then you are on the right track......check the plain plates are flat, not buckled........its also possible the friction material expands with heat...........The only sure cure is the old A10 trick of selecting neutral while still on the move.

Thanks for the info...........if the taper roller is right ,Ill leave it there..........My finances dont run to Indians anymore,Im just sorting out some stuff for next weeks swapmeet.,and thought I might clean out the black sticky oil the gearbox had in it.....Its been in a crash, likely, one lug is broken, and the round face of the gearcase mount has been trimmed flat in one spot for some reason or other.Never the less, its still a complete Scout gearbox, gears in serviceable condition,as they say,and someone will need it.....Again,thanks for the info.

British Bikes / Re: Tank identity ??
« on: June 21, 2018, 02:29:31 PM »
I have no doubt that the whole bike is Indian 249 less motor and box........the oil tank may not be Ariel, but looks a lot like one.........the 249 had the oil tank on the other side, and a lot smaller..Its near impossible to see what the gearbox is,but HD 4 speed would be a good choice  for the motor.
