Identify these bikes! / Little two speed box
« on: April 25, 2022, 08:10:40 AM »
I was given this little two speed gearbox and a brass carb body. The bloke tried to tell me box was from a Douglas, but looks to me more like an ATCO mower and the carb too.
I gave them a bead blast to clean off the crud. The box has LG 49291 as the only markings on it. The brass carb has a 3/4" bore.
Hoping one of you clever blokes can identify what/from what.

The Classic Biker Bar / Seized piston
« on: February 15, 2022, 06:29:02 AM »
My Grandson has aquired another 'treasure' that has had a seized piston and has left lots of alloy stuck to the cast liner, so I am asking you gentlemen if anybody can remember the type of acid used to eat off the alloy from the liner. I used to know this and have done a few in the past but after the doctors drilled a hole in my head last year I cannot remember  what it was. Any help much appreciated.

British Bikes / What was used on 1930's BSA wiring
« on: March 26, 2021, 08:07:58 AM »
One of my friends today asked me what should he use on his 1931 BSA to rewrap the wiring in as the bits he has done with plastic insulation tape look crap. He has done a great job of keeping the original patina, just rebuild bits to keep it going and riding, but the wiring wrap just makes it look off. Any suggestions I can pass on to help him make it look better please.

British Bikes / Grigg motorbike.
« on: July 09, 2016, 09:15:21 AM »
Upon reading through the June issue (yes we are a bit behind here in Aus) of The Classic Motor Cycle, I came across a small article top of page 10 about a Grigg motorbike with a 1000cc B&H v twin engine. The Grigg I have heard of before, but who made the B&H (Bacher and Hellow) engine? Can anybody enlighten me please.
Sheldons Emu has this; http://cybermotorcycle.com/euro/wikig/Grigg.html

British Bikes / 1969 Triumph Daytona
« on: November 12, 2014, 06:05:20 AM »
One of my local club members has been having his 500cc Triumph Daytona repaired by an older gentleman who has sadly passed away. It is a very nice bike with only 9,000 miles on the clock. The bike has developed a slight miss on the right cylinder and he has asked me to have a look at what maybe wrong. It has a single carb, electronic ignition with good spark to both plugs and swapping coils makes no difference. I am thinking that it may be valve trouble and was wondering what I should set the clearances to before I do a compression test. Any advise would be very helpful as I have never worked on a Triumph twin before.

Japanese Bikes / Yamaha YDS-5 1967
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:57:39 AM »
Recently completed an 18 month rebuild of my 1967 Yamaha YDS-5 250cc two stroke twin.
From the worn out neglected pile of bits (some missing) to a rideable bike I have done all myself, including painting and polishing, welding seat and broken crankcase and engine overhaul. Need some fine tuning but rides nice.

British Bikes / Cleaning fins on barrel
« on: August 04, 2014, 09:37:36 AM »
Anybody have a good recipe for getting years of burnt on oil off the barrel of a two stroke, mainly around the exhaust port.
I have been soaking it in petrol but doesn't seem to be softening it at all. Was thinking of something chemical as I didn't want to sandblast it.
Any ideas appreciated.

The Classic Biker Bar / Front number plates
« on: July 03, 2014, 10:20:55 AM »
Can anybody tell me when front number plates were changed from the along the guard (like English ones) to across the guard here in Australia? Did this change over date vary state to state, or was it nation wide? Any help greatfully received.   :)

British Bikes / MEC
« on: May 07, 2014, 08:56:37 AM »
I met a bloke at a rally last weekend who said he had part of an old belt drive bike and the only identification on it was the letters MEC on the engine casing. Have any of you gentlemen ever heard of an MEC bike or engine maker. I googled it and only found an engineering company in Melbourne Australia (Melbourne Engineering Company) that may have had something to do with engines or bikes. Any ideas?

British Bikes / Bradbury motorbike.
« on: September 06, 2013, 10:04:34 PM »
When I was growing up on our farm I remember there being parts of an old belt drive bike behind the machinery shed. The front wheel had no brake just a small hub like a heavy duty bicycle. The rear wheel had a belt rim and drum brake. Dad used the petrol tank on a pump engine, and my older brother put the wheels on a cart. An uncle used the engine for a generator set.
On discussing this with my brother he thought it was a 'Bradbury' (Bradberry, Bradbery, Bradburry?) as this was out Grandmothers maiden name. Dad buried the rest along with some other old machinery (tractor, harvester, binder, steam engine) when he had a big clean up in 1961. Has anybody heard of a 'Bradbury'? It may have been an Australian made machine from imported parts. Sadly all those who knew what happened to it have passed.

« on: June 30, 2013, 09:33:50 AM »
Now that we have established that the remains I have are Royal Enfield Model A (thanks to all your help) I am wondering what engine was used. Was it a Villiers or did R.E. make thier own?

British Bikes / Ambassador Series 1
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:55:20 PM »
Hello all from Australia. I am looking for a photo and information about the '46 to '48 Series 1 Ambassador two stroke. I have been led to belive that they were fitted with Webb pressed metal girder forks, and used a twin down tube rigid frame. Can anybody show or point me in the right direction of a decent photo.

Many thanks, Steve.
