Thanks to all who replied. The box I plan to clean up and put aside until I see one of the local Douglas owners. The carb I could use on a Villiers engine if I could find the rest of it.

I was given this little two speed gearbox and a brass carb body. The bloke tried to tell me box was from a Douglas, but looks to me more like an ATCO mower and the carb too.
I gave them a bead blast to clean off the crud. The box has LG 49291 as the only markings on it. The brass carb has a 3/4" bore.
Hoping one of you clever blokes can identify what/from what.

I have used a split link in a Honda balancer chain and as far as I know it is still giving good service.

Thanks for the replies.
I went to the big green hardware store today and met one of my old motorcycle friends as I went in. We stood in the shade for a chat and asked what I was getting. I told him about the seized piston in the grandson's XT600 Tenere and was going to get some caustic soda to eat off the alloy. He told me hydrocloric acid (also known as muriatic acid) was much better and safer to use, and it rung a bell in my memory. I bought 500ml for $2.00 and home. Only used a cap full and it bubbled all the alloy off within a few minutes and washed away with water. Job done ready to hone. Who would have though that pool additive was so useful out of the pool.  ;D

My Grandson has aquired another 'treasure' that has had a seized piston and has left lots of alloy stuck to the cast liner, so I am asking you gentlemen if anybody can remember the type of acid used to eat off the alloy from the liner. I used to know this and have done a few in the past but after the doctors drilled a hole in my head last year I cannot remember  what it was. Any help much appreciated.

Don't understand why a lot of people rubbish Villiers. I have had a few (still have one) over the years and found them to be, if looked after properly, to be a reliable engine and mostly easy starters. We had on our farm 2 and 4 stroke engines running pumps, air blowers and lawn mower as well as bikes. The Wolverhampton factory at one time employed over 2,000 people so they must have been doing something right. There was even a factory in Ballarat, Victoria in Australia that employed many locals in it's 20 acre factory.

British Bikes / What was used on 1930's BSA wiring

One of my friends today asked me what should he use on his 1931 BSA to rewrap the wiring in as the bits he has done with plastic insulation tape look crap. He has done a great job of keeping the original patina, just rebuild bits to keep it going and riding, but the wiring wrap just makes it look off. Any suggestions I can pass on to help him make it look better please.
