Intake gasket? Had a Triumph Daytona 500 with right cylinder running lean, checked valves, plugs, compression test, cleaned carb and found a bit of the gasket missing underneath the manifold. New gasket and all good again.

Very interesting topic.
The GM/Detroit (and similar) differ in using a mechanical driven supercharger to push in the fresh air, but were none the less a good engine if used with the right oils.

European and Other Bikes / Re: 2V Jawa Speedway Engine Piston Seized
« on: March 17, 2015, 07:36:32 AM »
Several ways of removing stuck pistons, but first question is how it seized? Was it from water/condensation corrosion or from a heat seizure?
If first type, I heat olive oil (or any thin oil, even ATF is ok) hot enough to fry chips in (cooking chips optional but why not use hot oil first) and pour into cylinder and let cool before the wood and hammer. Some times have to do a couple of times before release.
If mechanical/heat seizure then melt the piston out with oxy acetylene torch to save barrel.

British Bikes / Re: Unknown engine with brass crankcase, English?

Looks a lot like the engine in the book 'Motor Bicycle Building' by Paul Hasluck from 1906. This gave instructions on how to make your own frame and engine. The barrel flange looks very similar to the one shown on page 51. It lists the engine as 3.5 hp, with 82mm bore, but doesn't list the stroke. Also the valve looks similar too.

Could it be too much oil in the system?

I don't know that they made a water-cooled engine prior to that,

Rex had watercooled engines quite early on.

Finding pictures and details will involve some more intensive searching.
Old magazines, etc. (some are online these days).

Wow, 900cc single and 2400cc twin (1200 per pot).
