Hi Bentley.
I live in an Aussie country town and in those days you just fronted up to the copper shop (police station), and the licencing sergent watched me go down the street, do a 'U' turn around a centre garden and come back and park in front of the station. When I did the car I took him to the corner shop to buy a packet of smokes and back to station.
I think growing up on the farm and driving everything I could from the time I was big enough helped. Most kids from the farms in those days had no trouble.
My dad bought a broken 1928 AJS 350cc in 1938, and after replacing the bigend bearing he rode it into town one Saturday morning to get his licence. The sergent asked him where he had come from? Dad replied that he had ridden the 35 miles from the farm. The sergent said, "if you can ride that far you'll be right" and gave him a licence!
Years later my mum got her driving licence in the only vehicle we had on the farm at the time, a three ton Bedford. She only handed in her heavy vehicle licence at 80yrs.

Being doubled on the back of my older brothers Triumph Saint. Scared me sh*tless, but when he stopped I asked him to do it again.
My first bike was a Yamaha 80cc 'T' framed YL-1. Flogged it around the farm until it broke the gearbox.

Japanese Bikes / Re: 1962 YD3 -- Running 1 cylinder??

As it is a two stroke that has probably been left with the fuel tap on over the years, I think Chaterlea25 is on the money with it just full of old fuel/oil. I had a similar problem with my YDS5, caused by the needle of left carb leaking. I would suggest you remove the carb while trying to clear the cylinder so you are not putting more fuel into it.
Re the seal; get it running first and then watch the pipes to see if the left is excessively smokey. The seal can be removed without splitting the cases, just takes a bit of fiddling with two small self tapping screws screwed into the seal body for something to get hold of with pliers to pull out. Use good quality sealant when refitting the new one.

I know what you mean Mark2.
Hard to believe that Yamaha's R1 rocketship will be eligible for historic rego next year.
The get together is always worth attending for the banter and to catch up on who has bought/sold what.

We have a similar type of 'get together' here in Australia on the second Sunday of every month at the local hardware store (Bunning's) carpark, from 9 to 11am. Usually get around a dozen bikes and 10 to 15 cars with a special attraction each month of a racing car, drag racer or local car dealership (Audi, Mercedes, Subaru, etc) putting on a display of new or flash models. It is a relaxed morning with usually a few laughs, and most of the bike boys go for a run to a local pub for lunch after.

Japanese Bikes / Re: Oil Leak 1983 Honda 650 Nighthawk

If the O ring in good condition it should not leak. Have you replaced it with an original or an aftermarket one? Some times the aftermarket ones are not quite the right size, and will leak. Have you checked where the O ring seats for any burrs or scratches? Do not use silicone as small bits can break off and get stuck in critical oil passageways and cause oil starvation which leads to big trouble.

Very interesting, similar to the Peterborough tractor idea.

I am finishing a YDS-5 resto and have found a lot of my bits from US ebay. Have your rubbers actually split or just gone hard as mine had. I heated them gently with a hot air gun and was able to stretch them back into shape. Try just putting the part numbers into google, or maybe try findapart.com.

The solo bike  has Minerva on the tank.
Can you not trace them through the English registration system?
