No, your right, my mistake. Tight valve clearances will slow down idle speed.

Sounds more like an air leak in the intake somewhere. Maybe as the engine gets hot a clearance expands and allows air to enter. Could also be a valve clearance problem getting tight. Is the ignition advancer free and not sticking?

Have been collecting a few bits and have decided to see how far I can get.
My question is about the frame castings joints. How are they braised/welded to the frame tubes and what is the best method to get them apart to replace the rusted tubes?

Recently completed an 18 month rebuild of my 1967 Yamaha YDS-5 250cc two stroke twin.
From the worn out neglected pile of bits (some missing) to a rideable bike I have done all myself, including painting and polishing, welding seat and broken crankcase and engine overhaul. Need some fine tuning but rides nice.

No problem Cardan, I like things to be spelt right too.   ;)
Actual problem came because I copied from the magazine, so Jim Scaysbrook got it wrong too!  >:(

Reading an article in the Australian magazine 'Old Bike' issue number 46 about the rider Jimmy Pringle.
He had gone to England in 1931 to work at the Rudge factory in the competitions department. He came home in time for the first motorcycle races at Phillip Island at the end of 1931, bringing with him a Rudge 499cc ridden by Graham Walker to victories at the Dutch, German and IoM TT races.
In August 1932 he again sailed to England and won his first start at the Brooklands Circuit riding a Grindlay-Peerless. He took home a 'Gold Star after lapping the circuit at 100.61 mph.

Is this the Grindlay-Peerless that is in the Sammy Miller museum?

Emptied the caustic out of the muffler today and flushed with a pressure washer. Came up like new.  ;)

Well I got it clean. Has been soaking in petrol for nearly two weeks now and it still hasn't moved. Have been giving it a stir every day with a stiff bristle brush but no moving. I tried some oven cleaner, but it didn't do much. I mixed up some caustic soda and it didn't even fizz, so I added 'a bit more' and it really fizzed over the side of the bucket. It did clean it, but turned the alloy black. I tried several types of soaps, scourer's and more petrol but it was still black. Finally resorted to the bead blaster and all looks new again.
Poured the caustic into the muffler to soak off years of carbon.

Thanks 33d6.
I have sent a few bits to a bloke in Sydney for the wet blasting and they have come back brilliant.
This is just around the fins where the pipe goes, it has been leaking for a while and over time (50+ years) has baked the oil to the Villiers alloy. I have a glass bead blaster myself but was thinking there must be something chemical that would lift the gunge without etching the alloy.
No kids around here.

Anybody have a good recipe for getting years of burnt on oil off the barrel of a two stroke, mainly around the exhaust port.
I have been soaking it in petrol but doesn't seem to be softening it at all. Was thinking of something chemical as I didn't want to sandblast it.
Any ideas appreciated.
