Japanese Bikes / Re: Any one had problems with POR 15 Tank Sealer?.
« on: February 09, 2014, 02:00:17 AM »
I too have had crap results with tank sealers, and ended up having to buy another tank. As for internal rust I put a handful of fine gravel (the type used to mix with tar for roads) in the tank and stuff it tight into a cement mixer with lots of foam and let it spin for a couple of hours. Works wonders without much effort. Just make sure to get all the gravel out when finished and give it a coat of motor oil to stop rust until ready to use.

Today visited a museum in the Hunter Valley in NSW and found a 1923 Beardmore frame with a Barr and Stroud engine sitting in the frame. These things get about.

Shame they didn't continue with them. With modern materials and manufacturing they might have been a real alternative for poppet valve engines.

Sounds good progress Joe. I have found the cost of re chroming a set of bars is usually about twice the price of a new set, plus they are not internally rusted or metal fatigued from 40+ years of use. Good idea to start on the small bits to see what you need to do before tackling the big bits.  :)

What a great find! Do you know anything of its history, or about the people who built the Lennox?
I am amazed at the number of small Australian company's and individuals who have made bikes over the years (I have been told it was over 200 different makers) and how there are still some to be found in old sheds and brought back to life. Was reading yesterday about the South Australian made Trebligs in Old Bike magazine and did some google on their history. The family are still in the motor trade, now selling cars (Toyota).

Very nice collection there. This is a Terrot in the National Motorcycle museum at Nabiac, NSW Australia.

The diagram shows a magneto with the points inside the flywheel, so no battery required. Follow the Bk (black) wire from the left side of engine up to the coil, then to the key switch. Disconnect from switch and try for sparks. The key switch acts as an earthing switch to ground the magneto, so should give spark without switch. Try removing the coil and clean where it mounts to the frame. If still no good you may have to remove the flywheel with a puller and clean and set the points. Welcome to the world of old bikes.

Any bike is worth restoring, but how much do you want to spend and how much time to spend on it. I got into restoring old bikes as a way of helping deal with depression, it has now turned into obsession with around 20 bikes. So do you want to get dirty and distracted, or is it something special that is worth a lot to you.
The fact that it is an Indian would make it worthwhile restoring, or just to make a reliable rider. It is your bike, so your call.

True Rex, but we had to give them a try otherwise there would be no Pommy cars here for the Irish to come over and buy to send back to replace their rusted ones.  ;D

Vauxhall was always badged as Vauxhalls in Australia, and although not that popular there was quite a few about. Holden was a different locally made car.

Nabiac has lots more than what is on their website, over 900 bikes in all. Haigsleigh has lots not on display, but if you ask them they will take you out the back to look at something special. Another one is in Peterborough in South Australia that has some unusual bikes.
