Try this site for the 'beam, it worked well for me recently. Buyer contact system cauts out all the tossers.

Better than ebay, as no fees at all. better even than a specialist Military site for my bike.
world wide market and stays on till sold.

Identify these bikes! / Another mystery bike to ID
« on: March 05, 2017, 12:56:28 PM »
OK, whats this one?
Photo date mid-1920s.
My first thought was BSA, but its not, its been suggested Rover,I'm not so sure

Druid forks don't suit BSA/Rover /Triumph
Mag is behind engine, chain cum belt drive, I cannot make out a front brake drum or rim

Some letters can be discerned on the crank case, now photo has been cleaned up it could be Rover at a pinch.
I don't place much reliance on the shape of the tank badge as its similar to many others of the era.

Its got electric light, which must be aftermarket stuff.

The shape of the barrel finning is really bugging me as I think I recognise it but can't remember.

Looks as if its a 500cc or up

Whats the most bodged old bike you ever came across that still ran?

Mine's an Ariel Huntmaster, back in 1977 I was asked to overhaul the engine in one, which attached to its sidecar was used to transport an old chap's wife and himself to visit their son in a care home.
Bike started and chuffed away quite happily, I could start it by just gently depressing the kickstart ;easy peasy, cushty little job.

famous last words
took the head off, inlet tract almost clogged with coke, exhaust nearly as bad, valves recessed back to last year, guides so slack you could get two valve stems down.Carb so slack you could hear the slide rattle.
Bores of course knackered, so down to the crankshaft, a bit of wear in the bigends, TS bush well fekked, so off to the regrinders, noticing, that the TS side was abit off centre.
Should have been a warning...

camshaft so worn that the followers ran between little ears the lobes had worn down so far, and the magneto was running in oil yet had a big fat blue spark.

Meanwhile back from the grinder came the crankshaft, "we had a bit of a job to centre it" said the man.

Oh dear, so, it goes into the cases, but one side won't go fully home, each side fits the bearings fine, yet together the cases won't meet, driving me nuts by now well over estimate of time and money.

Scuriny of the now chemically cleaned crankshaft shows faint vice marks on the webs, with sinking heart I measure the distances, the damn thing had been gripped so hard in a vice it was bent.

"Was the last bloke to work on this a mechanic?"  I asked
"no its my neighbour, he's a dustman."

every word is true, I found another crankshaft and what the so called engineering shop did to that is another story, just as bad, if anyone out there has an A10 crank with the sludge trap welded, I can tell them why.

Its tribute I think to that old BSA/Ariel engine that it could keep going that worn out.

« on: January 01, 2017, 09:01:40 PM »

On ebay 142230752614 there is a bronze amal carb with a NOS body allegedly made by "Allsports" in australia.

Can any of you down under chappies  cast any light on it?

British Bikes / unusual KLG plug ID needed
« on: March 10, 2016, 11:22:13 AM »
I thought I could cross ref most old plugs, but now I have picked up a mica bodied KLG 646, with a non detachable body; 14mm short reach, 3 fins turned on body and with that disc electrode. Only other markings are two small  astericks and RR .
obvously RR brings to mind rolls royce;doubt it, or road race

I can't find it in any cross ref lists, any one got any ideas?

Anyone got any idea how to get through the wall of  secretive security this club puts up?
I have registered, after a load of nonsense, and  received  email acknowledgement notice, then nothing since.
It seems impossible to find an email address for any officer of that club unless I want to go via a microsoft app. no thanks.

All I want to do is buy a bloody LE :-\ :o :o :o :o

British Bikes / any vintage sunbeam fans on here?
« on: June 07, 2015, 06:05:58 PM »
I have a 1929 Model 1 in more or less untouched condition, apart from the toolboxes which I have made.
I have a couple Sunbeam spanners but would like to know if anyone has a list of what tools were issued with Sunbeams of vintage era.
Can anyone help?
The Sunbeam sidevalve site seems to be dead, and the Marston site wants me to pay  £23 to register before I'm allowed into its forum. Having seen the fatality rate of Vintage sunbeam sites I'm not keen on that.
