British Bikes / "New" bike
« on: April 14, 2017, 10:20:20 AM »
No buyer for the Sunbeam yet so I decided there was in fact room in my garage for an extra and have gone for this:

I've never got on well with 2 strokes but always liked the look of these. All there, in decent condition but a few (probably a lot) of tidying up to do.

Site Feedback / Logging in

When I log in, I always tell it to keep me logged in "forever". However, it never seems to remember this and I always have to re-login every visit.

Being a lazy character, I'd rather it remembered who I am (as virtually every other forum I frequent does). Any suggestions?

British Bikes / Norton Model 18 EJF 937
« on: December 27, 2015, 03:31:59 PM »
This was my first "proper" bike in the early 1970s. I bought it (as a 16H combination) from a chap who'd travelled to Spain and back aboard it.

I was idly looking at the DVLA tax page and thought I would see if it was still around and it is - showing as not taxed.

Anybody here know anything about it?

British Bikes / Sunbeam Model 10 exhaust valve collet urgently wanted
« on: November 09, 2015, 12:02:23 PM »
I just wanted to check the compression ratio on my Sunbeam Model 10 so had the head complete with valves upside down on the bench. I heard a tinkle and there was one of the exhaust valve collets lying there. I wasn't quick enough to stop the other one shooting across the workshop and of course it's vanished.

Just in the hope (a) that it's shared with another model and (b) that someone has one lying about its dimensions are:

Length:  0.463"
Bore:     0.250"
Major diameter:  0.600"
Minor diameter:  0.412"

My parts list suggests that this part is, like so many other, unique to the model but I can live in hope.

Otherwise I'll have to try to make one and I'm not sure my machining skills are up to it.......

I have to say it's a good job this happened on the bench not when the engine was running.

British Bikes / Amal Type 4 experts?
« on: October 14, 2015, 12:24:13 PM »
My Sunbeam Model 10 has a (teeny weeny) Amal Type 4 carb - the sort with radial holes around the bottom of the mixing chamber. I have no experience with this model and am struggling a bit to understand the idle circuit.

There is no idle jet. There is an air screw, opposite which there is a small drilling (1mm or so - not measured) communicating with the air screw passage. There is another drilling coming vertically up from the base of the carb also communicating with that passage.

Above the latter drilling and in line with it is what I presume to be the idle air feed into the carb bore.

Am I correct in believing that the idle air supply is coming from these 2 external drillings?

Autojumble / Looking for air slide for type 75 / 275 Amal

I know these are available from Hitchcocks etc but wondered if anyone had a surplus slide, spring and guide tube lying around to complete my Sunbeam's carb?

The Classic Biker Bar / Braze filling exhaust prior to plating
« on: September 20, 2015, 09:54:24 AM »
I'm getting round to having the chroming done for my 1931 Sunbeam. The exhausts are solid but have some minor dents. I'd like to have them filled with brass if possible - does anybody have any recommendations in the Midlands for this?

Many thanks

Site Feedback / Classified ads?

The autojumble section says use the classified ads section to sell whole bikes. But I can't find it......

The Classic Biker Bar / Hello
« on: June 14, 2015, 09:53:00 AM »
Just joined this forum after buying a 1931 Sunbeam Model 10.

I've always hgad at least one British bike in the shed / garage since 1972 but these have all been post-war and more often than not Nortons - especially a Commando I had for 25 years.

Looking forward to getting to grips with the hand change etc once I've fettled it!
