The gearbox is fine, it's the clevis pins in the linkage that wear and they're easily replaced. That box was used on Inters and Manxes right up to the Featherbed ( as were the "undersized" 5/8 x 1/4 chains) so can't be too bad....

But I agree with the rest of what mini-me said.

Do you see a decent return to the tank when it's running? I don't know the AMC twins but my G80 return was very sluggish.

I can't quite see why bore wear should lead to oil in the primary chaincase unless the breather isn't working. Admittedly it will increase crankcase pressure but there won't be any more oil in there than normal.

How much oil comes out when you drain the crankcase, and have you tried doing it again after the bike has stood for a while to check it's not wet sumping?

Surely any passenger is a third party and hence would be covered under that section of the insurance?

Is he still around? I had the impression he'd shuffled off.

I'd have thought that getting rid of the ton of slack should go a long way to reducing the clutch drag.

I look forward to many stories of trials and tribulations....

The Brightspark external magneto capacitor seems to work very well and it's tiny.......

I'd be looking at blocked main / needle jet to start with, but could easily be a magneto issue. Could also be poor fuel flow - blocked tap etc.

They do indeed have an excellent forum: http://www.jampot.com/forum/. The club is very good.

A couple of other useful links: http://www.amcclassicspares.com/ have huge quantities of used spares; Christian's archive at http://archives.jampot.dk/ has all the manuals etc you could ever need.

Those forks are easy enough to strip. That's what I would do just in case there's a broken spring (or sprong if you prefer) or the like in there.

There are some 250RS enthusiasts here: http://www.thumperclub.com/smf/index.php - may be worth asking?

British Bikes / Re: Timing cover leak
« on: May 03, 2019, 01:11:23 PM »
What the PRV normally does is to prevent excess oil pressure getting to the bearings etc, especially with cold thick oil. Usually what happens is that the valve is forced off its seat against spring pressure, and what comes out (which would be oil) generally gets sprayed around the timing gears etc. It's normal for the valve to lift under normal circumstances but obviously not all the time.... And clearly it shouldn't come out of the joint you mention. Maybe a breathing problem?

Have you had a delve in Christian's archive which has everything anybody ever wanted to know about AMCs? http://archives.jampot.dk/

The AMC forum is good as well although I think you need to join the club to get full access.

I thought you decided against the Triumph?

Are you sure the return side of the oil pump (actually I seem to remember that the AMC twins had 2 pumps) is working? There should be no more than oil mist in that area. I don't know the engine in detail but oil pressure release valves usually open to allow excess pressure back into the timing cover so you may be on to something there.

Did you get this instead of the Triumph? Much nicer bike IMO.
