British Bikes / Re: Triumph unit small twins

Yes, I don't anticipate any real difficulty once I've sorted out which bits are serviceable and which not. I've started collecting the Britton articles but as you say a lot of waffle - although reasonably well written - and much of no interest to me. But all grist to a somewhat overwhelmed mill.

I think I have a decent 500 barrel which is either standard or on first rebore and a set of +.040" low compression pistons to suit. One crankshaft seems to be in good condition with good threads and no play on the big ends (although will strip to check) and no marks on the timing side journal. The relevant head is very corroded but will have it vapour blasted to see what's underneath - hopefully will be OK with maybe a light skim of the head face.

I'll print out the parts list and go through methodically to see what is useable, what is scrap, and what I need to source. In parallel sorting out registration for the Greeves which I need to do while it still retains its (non-original but correct period) 9E engine.

Many thanks, I think I remember seeing a couple of these articles although at the time wasn't interested! I can get electronic versions of 2 years' worth of back copies of the mag through my local library so will start looking!

I'm embarking on a new project - a Grumph / Tri-Greeves. I have a Hawkstone frame and a job lot of Triumph engine parts - both 500 and 350. I'm not at all familiar with Triumphs so would very much welcome any hints and tips from the collected wisdom here. I will have a load of surplus bits so these will become available once I understand what I need and what not.

Thanks in advance

You can always set the search to be only in your own country or even within a specified distance of your location.

I agree much of what is on offer is junk but patience is often rewarded.....

I doubt there is an owners clun for them but I think the British Two Stroke Club can get you a dating certificate. May well be worth joining anyway.

Autojumble / Re: Honda CX500 tank wanted

People have used the CB250 tank but it needs a lot of bashing around underneath and is also on the short side. I'm going to keep the side panels and original (but modified) seat. I'll fill the badge mountings and use a wing type decal plus probably gold lining. I expect problems but solving them is what winter's for....

I have found a candidate tank that looks in reasonably sound condition. There were a lot of CXs around.....

This is a long shot but I'm modifying an XBR500 to do away with the giant petrol tank and am looking for a CX500 tank in useable condition. In the UK. Thanks for looking!

Of course the primary chain doesn't do a lot when you're dealing with the clutch mainshaft nut.......

Can't see how you'd have any drive if they were that loose. Rattle when clutch lifted yes but that's not what he says.

I reckon they're good enough if they're within 1mm - .040". The kick where they're welded usually throws them out by more than this.

Gearbox mainshafts are also often slightly bent.

I can't see how your first two could cause this - provided you're not dec lutching of course. Flutter on the auto advance?

British Bikes / Re: 1973 Bonneville exhaust headers

The fine threaded port on Nortons is fine with a cast iron head - indeed mine was solely responsible for holding the exhaust on for some miles after the silencer bracket - aftermarket item of course - fractured. I admit that it could cause problems on the alloy Commando head but usually because people didn't keep it tight enough.
